I've inadvertently collected a lot of comments lately, which I put into three categories:1. Well-appreciated sensitivity2. Careless or misguided barbs3. Foot-in-mouth-isms that make the speaker feel bad and me laugh Here are some examples:1. Well-appreciated sensitivity: My cousin told my mother that she was really worried and didn't know how to tell me that she was pregnant.  I love her simply for remembering that it might hurt me to find out.  That softened the blow a lot. 2. Careless or misguided barbs: First: My grandmother told me that I shouldn't worry about getting pregnant; I could just borrow my cousin's child, who was "so darling!"  Second: We saw some distant friends over Christmas and they asked when we would start trying to have a family.  We told them we'd done IVF unsuccessfully and were still trying.  The rest of the evening they gave us "tips" for what we should do if we decide to have children.  The mom also showed me what she called "absolute bliss": when your baby is asleep and nuzzled up to your neck.  It was like getting kicked in the face. 3. Foot-in-mouth-isms that the speakers regret big-time: First: At the infertility clinic yesterday, the financial counselor is 8.5 months pregnant and was training a temporary replacement for her maternity leave.  We were discussing how it can really get uncomfortable to be that pregnant.  The replacement, forgetting where the hell she was, told her, "I don't envy you!"   Second: I was having coffee with my friend's brother (who knew I was doing IVF).  We were discussing how our lives were so similar that we might be the same person.  "But I can't get pregnant," he said, before he could edit himself.

Oops to your friend\'s brother! But I have confidence that you *will* get pregnant one day (baby dust, baby dust), whereas he *definitely* won\'t! (Or if he does, will certainly make some serious headlines...)

Yay for sensitivity and caring! And who knows, maybe your friend\'s brother will be pregnant right along w/ you this year, a la Arnold Schwarzzenegger in that silly movie from years ago that I can\'t remember the title of.

Ouch, I\'ve been there! People don\'t know what to say. I had someone say, \"I guess God has made the decision for you, whether you\'ll have kids or not\".... Sorry!
