Angry Author Ahead Despair is a great muse. Some of the most moving works of literature and poetry come from its very depths. Read Poe’s The Raven, for example. Job is one of my go-to Biblical reads when I need to scratch that particular itch. Its pages contain some of the most beautiful prose found in either Testament. Anger, by comparison, is an awful muse. I’ve read some harsh stuff that was birthed from obvious rage. For starters, you have to the obligatory profanity. Beyond that, I think the problem with anger is that it is so familiar to so many people. There is little you can put down on paper that can open a new dimension to the reader that would make them think, “Wow, I never felt that angry.” You can do that with despair. You can do that with love. I’ve seen it done with hate. Anger is tough. There are a multitude of things that one should never do in anger, and one of them is write. Ok, three paragraphs. How do I feel now? Fuck.
