My granddaughter spent the weekend with me and we went over her major arteries and wound care like Kevin suggested. She told me the first time she cut she was 10 and it was because some kids at school were giving her a hard time. She stopped and promised herself she wouldn't do it again then her mom and dad started having problems and got divorced and she started again. The third time was when her mom was dying. This time its because of everything. The one year anniversary of her mom's death, adjusting to a new school and new home (her dad and his girlfriend moved in together) feeling like no one listens to her, leaving her friends.. Everything. I listened, showed her this website and we talked. Her dad thinks she is just cutting to get attention. She made me promise not to tell him about the other times because she is afraid of getting in trouble. He has canceled her therapist appointment because he doesn't think it will help. I am so frustrated with him and I don't know what to do. She promised me she would tell me before she cuts again but she is grounded from her phone and I'm afraid she wont be able to. I call her everyday on her dads phone but they stand beside her listening to make sure she doesn't make another call. I've thought about getting her a prepaid so she can call but they search her room and if they found it I wouldn't get to see her anymore and she would be even more isolated. I bought her some word search and crossword puzzle books and she has regular books but I afraid it isn't enough. I told her to talk to her counselor at school whom she likes. Maybe the counselor can intervene with her dad? He is threatening to send her boarding school if she cuts again. Does anyone have any other ideas?

I\'m glad you\'ve opened up this dialogue with your granddaughter, you can be so important for her at this time. Does your grandaughter have access to a computer - preferably her own?
skype - both voice and video calls or simple text chat from computer (home or any other) & cell phone
google Hangouts - also both voice and video calls or simple text chat from computer (home or other) & cell phone
both of thee are free if both of you have to programs / apps installed .....
just make sure you have both installed on your comp and your cell phone - and that both are open with you active and showing as active. You\'ll get instant notification when your granddaughter contacts you on either of those
as an afterthought, i\'d be tempted to just ask your granddaughter to just try and let you know before she cuts, you and i know that in such circumstances the \"promise\" word mean we\'ll try our best BUT for kids they may take it literally - and then if for any reason they can\'t keep the promises it might just add a layer of guilt to the emotional stress they\'re already carrying? Just a thought is all, may not be relevant fr you and your granddaughter?
fingers crossed for you both
