Don't have a lot of time to write but thought I'd pop on to write about yesterday. I was just too tired last night to even type. Started out slow yesterday, waking up at 7:30am after probably only 4 hours of sleep. Got up and got started with my morning routine and ended up crashing on the couch...which caused me to miss my appointment with the mental health nurse. Opps. Called her and it was alright...I didn't really need the appointment anyway since I'm doing well these days. Went to my Occupational Therapy appointment, met him for the first time...it went well but we decided were I'm already connected with someone else that can do all the same things he can that we wouldn't meet again...so that's cool. Was only there about 15 minutes so had time to run some errands and take my friends little girls hat back to them. Did that, well stuck it in their mailbox since they weren't home and then picked up a couple things at a little grocery store near their place. Waited for what felt like eons for the bus back to my place. Got home and there was someone laying in our apartment driveway. I went to my apartment, put my stuff away and then went to the window to look out. He was still there...but now there were a couple people with him (thankfully). I went outside to see if they needed any help or anyone to be called. The man was obviously very very drunk and had a laceration on his forehead from when he fell. So I called the police and ambulance and was told that someone already called about 10 minutes earlier! I'm like...well, they haven't showed up yet. So they said they'd update the ambulance. This man could barely talk, he could not stand on his own two feet, bleeding, and at this point it's just me and this other girl trying to watch this guy to make sure he doesn't get hurt further...he's twice our size. He kept holding on to us with all his weight and trying to walk and we're trying to convince him to stay put and to sit back down or lay back down since he was so unstable. After about another 10 minutes still no police or ambulance even though we've seen a few police cars drive by so I put in another call. Finally some people are starting to stop but not who we needed. A bus driver even pulled his bus over to help and he had some first aid supplies so was able to put something on the forehead laceration. Another stranger puts in a call to the emergency services and we're still waiting. Totally insane...30 min or so before a police officer even arrives. Gee, I hope no one was seriously hurt or dying while waiting for help to arrive yesterday...it was insane! I was just worried that this guy was going to get combative as he was very upset that we were calling the police and ambulance (ambulance costs $130 or more). He kept crying and appologizing and we were just trying to reassure him he'd be okay that they just wanted to help. Luckily it was good officers that arrived...I knew the one that arrived and my dad used to work with his father and the officer also knew this guy and his daughter so was able to keep him calm and engage him in some conversation...well sorta. More conversation then we had been able to get since he couldn't even tell us his name. Felt so bad...I know how horrible it is to have to go to the hospital when you don't want to...to have the police and ambulance called when you don't want them to be...but what else could we do, really. I guess he's one of the guys who digs in our garbage for cans and bottles...I hope I see him doing that someday so I at least know he's somewhat okay. I know that sounds odd...I just want to see him again standing on his own two feet. I don't want to see him in that lifestyle but I want to see him doing better then he was yesterday and if he's on his two feet sorting through the trash then that is better then yesterday. He seems like a nice older man who's unfortunately got a bad drinking problem. But he never once got aggressive or mean...even with the alcohol and that's what I was worried about. Two young girls helping a drunk old man who is aggresive could've been a very dangerous situation. But I believe the Lord placed me there to help, there is no way I could not have done something. And I believe that my past experiences (and God, of course) are what gave me the courage and ability to step way out of my comfort zone and be there for this person. I'm not by any means saying all this to brag...but simply to remember that the Lord gives us strength and courage and He prepares us for these situations in different ways. I couldn't have been the same support I was, had I not have had the experiences I have had both personally speaking and in working in the Emergency Room. The other thing though that really stuck with me...was his eyes....they were hauntingly empty...like a death stare. His addiction really seems to have such a hold on him...and I just hope and pray that maybe somehow, yesterday's experience for him will be some sort of turning point. I dunno. Anyway, after all that I came in and unwound for a bit and then got invited out with my friend J and his daughter. So went to the mall and hung out with them for a bit and it was an overall good time and great day...even though him and I talked about some hard stuff. I've written before about his wife and the choices she's making. Was refreshing to hear things from his side for a change. Anyway...I just looked at the time and I have to run and get ready to catch a bus. Going to go work on my resume.
