Building up ones defenses against adversity... listening, reading, singing Bible verses and scriptures... regardless of the minister, pastor, preacher, apostle, bishop, priest... if they are the Words of God there is opportunity for guidance, protection, healing, communication.  "Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path." Psalm 119:105It's the ultimate affirmation of information, because within this book, life is described from different layers of understanding, dimensions, and circumstances.Are portions of your life a reflection of narrated accounts of the Bible? Abraham, Sarah, Jacob, Joseph, Moses, Joshua, Ruth, Esther David, Daniel, Isaiah, Peter, Thomas, Paul, etc. each presenting their unique characters within a variety of circumstances. God has different ministers for different people, so the means by which we receive the scripture is not as important as the power behind the message being received, and certainly we have preferences in styles of communication.  When we become more acquianted with  verses and accounts, our vocabulary to communicate with God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit increases... allowing us to get closer to God, Our Father."... even the rocks would cry out...", everyday ... everywhere ... anytime ... anyhow, once we have given Our Lord and Saviour access to our heart, He will do whatever is necessary to keep you close, guide you, warn you, comfort you ... not limited to Sundays, a friend, a stranger, a creation of His can have an impact on you... it "speaks" to you.There are no coincidences, God is in control... and even during early training, those babysteps... He has brothers and sisters around us to walk us thru... ask Him for confirmations, verify with the Holy Spirit when in doubt, because the enemy knows scripture. As DS friend Rick3095 referenced recently, remember to put on the Armour of God, picking up a few verses from both the Old and New Testament that reflect the situation being faced, and hold on to them, kind of like a positive affirmation. Keep in perspective that you will always be better off with God, no matter what the circumstances, He is with you and He will get you thru."My times are in your hands, (Father)..." carried me thru and still does in trying circumstances. And another DS friend, Angelndisguise, posted on her journal King David's  words "create in me a clean heart.." which is excellent when struggling against unhealthy behaviors, thoughts, and influences.
