I recently completed another chapter in the PTSD workbook, and am having issues with it. Here is my dilemna. I do not undertand what "No," means. I feel like ever since that night, my no became a yes. However, if I say yes to someone, and don't follow through it is a no, which in turn makes me a hyprocrite, and the Bible condemns that. James speaks of having our yes be yes and our no no. The more I think about that he could mean "respect for others and boundaries." So I guess the next question is respect. What is "respect?" Here is what the internet says, and the link to it as well. http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/respect. 1.a particular, detail, or point (usually prec. by in): to differ in some respect. 2.relation or reference: inquiries with respect to a route. 3.esteem for or a sense of the worth or excellence of a person, a personal quality or ability, or something considered as a manifestation of a personal quality or ability: I have great respect for her judgment. 4.deference to a right, privilege, privileged position, or someone or something considered to have certain rights or privileges; proper acceptance or courtesy; acknowledgment: respect for a suspect's right to counsel; to show respect for the flag; respect for the elderly. 5.the condition of being esteemed or honored: to be held in respect. 6.respects, a formal expression or gesture of greeting, esteem, or friendship: Give my respects to your parents. 7.favor or partiality. 8.Archaic. a consideration. –verb (used with object) 9.to hold in esteem or honor: I cannot respect a cheat. 10.to show regard or consideration for: to respect someone's rights. 11.to refrain from intruding upon or interfering with: to respect a person's privacy. 12.to relate or have reference to. —Idioms 13.in respect of, in reference to; in regard to; concerning. 14.in respect that, Archaic. because of; since. 15.pay one's respects, a.to visit in order to welcome, greet, etc.: We paid our respects to the new neighbors. b.to express one's sympathy, esp. to survivors following a death: We paid our respects to the family. 16.with respect to, referring to; concerning: with respect to your latest request. I believe numbers 10 and 11 are the real definition. I guess the issue that arises is, "How does one show respect for someones boundaries when he or she does not know what yes or no mean after his or her violation?" CAN ANY OF YOU ANSWER THIS FOR ME. Does any of this make sense? I know that on that night I had boundaries. I kept telling him, "No," but he would not listen to me. He wouldn't!!!! I kept telling him that I trust him that he wouldn't take advantage of me, plus I gave him the definition of rape, but its like he didn't care. He took advantage of the fact that my brother was going to prison. He is a SICK man who desperately needs needs God.

Hmmm...that is a very good question. I think that \"no\" is a word the defines your boundaries. As soon as you said \"no\" or even as soon as you started struggling against him and he kept going he had stepped over the boundary that you had clearly defined for him by saying \"no.\" Just because he didn\'t regard it does not mean that your no had any less value. Burgalars ignore signs that say Keep Out but the sign definitely has value and so does the word \"no.\" It wasn\'t your fault that this happened! I might also add that any lack of concent also means \"no.\" Many people don\'t have signs on their yard saying keep out but that does not mean that the owners want the burgalar in. It is only until a person is invited that it is okay for another person to come into their house. You just made sure that he knew you did not want it. That is why it is a crime. Your boundaries and so your \"no\" still means the same thing as before, even though it does not seem like it right now. Are you/did you press charges against him? Again I am so sorry this happened to you and none of it was your fault! I hope that made sense and answered your question. I am thinking of you and praying for you. Take care of yourself and God bless.
Thanks Elizabeth! This entry is very interesting. I can tell you that No means no and yes means yes. At anytime when we say no it should be respected...but some people think no means yes and yes means no....
I think that the next time someone asks something of you that you should let them know you\'re going thru a rough patch and tell them that you\'ll try but you can\'t make any promises right now. Or, just say no if that\'s what you need to do. Most of all, be good to yourself and don\'t blame yourself for any of this.
Much love, Kim
