Before school starts I need to think about: 1) Recertification due June 17, find the documentation, do I need to take another course this year? 2) Masters +60, highest salary track, what's the most cost-effective way of getting there (i.e. I have 15 more years until retirement, will the course cost be paid off by the expense of getting the credits in that amount of time)? 3) Retirement. No early option, I think. It would be to my advantage to get the +60, since retirement is based on the average of highest three years of income. I could retire now, (I have the minimum required years of service) but I'd only get 26% of that average. Working to 65 means I would get 80% of that average (highest possible allowed). It also means I will need to re-certify three more times (5 year cycles), so perhaps some judicious planning about coursework to satisfy 1 & 2. 4) The massage therapy option I've been thinking about. I'm looking for a secondary source of income doing something that it COMPLETELY different from teaching. I've been pondering this for some time (one of my goals) - and wondering if this is the right year to start that. The program I'm looking at is $14, 17 months, Wednesday nights and Saturday all day. My trainer, who is also a masseur, thinks I can easily make back the cost of the course within the first year. 5) If I had the bucks I'd call in the professional organizer I worked with a couple years ago. I can do all this if I don't drop any of the balls (I'm smart enough), but I'm also so scattered (probably ADD)... how did I manage to get THIS far in my life? 6) Setting up the cello studio - students continuing from last year, and it looks like it will need to be two nights a week. 7) Setting up my classroom, but that will have to wait until they clean it. Every summer they drag everything out of the room, deep-clean and wax the floors. Chaos until they do, so can't put stuff where I want it until they finish. Spent hours yesterday entering official dates on iCal and wished that MobileMe would get their act together so the all the calendars will sync. Currently they don't. :( Meanwhile, time for breakfast (at 11? yeah, I stayed up late...) and then off to work the cash register at the Garden.
