5 Days. 2000 Miles.Last Sunday, July 1. Somehow I manage to get in a workout, get packed and on the road by 11:00. It’s a beautiful cool summer day, sunny, very few clouds. The drive is uneventful – I arrive at my western PA destination in 9 1/2 hours. I've already asked Mom if they can pick up Janie - she lives about 35 miles from them, but it's an hour over rural roads. It will save me an extra two hours picking them up if they are all together at the folk's. They've agreed. Janie calls me to say she's been picked up. Then she calls me to say they've made it to their house. I'm still driving. About halfway there Mom calls my cell. It’s on vibrate (no, there is no ring tone that I want to hear coming from it, ever!), so I catch her message on one of my pee breaks. Her brother Harley is flying in from Salt Lake City, he’s arriving tomorrow around 4, could I pick him up? Yes, she knows we’ll miss the Monday night viewing, but he’ll miss his sister’s funeral altogether otherwise, since no one else is going to be able to get him without adding several hours to their already long trips.“Sure,” I tell her.I look at my station wagon. It’s a 2000 Volvo V40 (I’ll never get another one, grumble, grumble, every time it needs maintenance goodbye $1,000). Basically it’s a small car, the back seat usually carries cargo, not people. More to the point, it’s not going to carry these people. Janie weighs in around 250, Uncle Harley is 86, small and spry, but my parents do not bend or fold very easily. Mom alternately uses crutches, walker and a wheel chair, Dad needs a cane, puffs and wheezes when too many steps are involved. They aren’t going to fit into my car, not even with a spatula, a shoe horn and copious amounts of petroleum jelly.I take a new interest in the highway traffic – I watch everything that passes wondering if my family would fit inside. Clearly I’m going to have to rent something, probably a minivan. Mom has said she owns a step (they used to have a Ford Explorer) she can use.At trip's end, my friend greets me warmly, has set up a bed in the spare room, I call everyone to tell them to stop worrying, I’m done driving for the day. I try to find rental info online but apparently haven’t used the correct keywords because I’m not discovering what I need to know. I give up and go to bed. Fortunately I can’t leave tomorrow until Uncle Harley arrives in the late afternoon, so I don’t set the alarm clock. - to be continued -
