Ok so i'm not as good at this as i thought.  I keep picking things up and making an excuse for keeping it... oh it was my mom's  or my daughter made it for me yada yada.  So I have been carrying things out to the garage then carrying half that back in then fighting with myself and bringing it back out there.  My only fear is people will pick stuff up to buy it and i'll whip it out of hands and say NO you can't have this ... hahahaha.     Seriously I made a lot of room in the basement for them to bring their boxes.   But now my garage looks stuffed.  So next step is to organize the stuff out there .   I just checked the weather and it's supposed to be nice all week but then get cold on the weekend That figures huh?  oh well.  I still have to get the permit and figure out how i'm going to advertise this.    It's moving along but i have to say i can't wait till it's over.     I have my doc visit tomorrow and get the results of the stress test so that will take a chunk out of my organizing time, or darn.  The nice thing is there is a Whole food store right by her office i love to stop in.  I could browse in that store for a long time.  so going to make it a good day tomorrow.  Thank you all for cheering me on in this garage sale mess lol...  love and need the support (or kick in the butt) to keep things going!!!

Having gone through this with my hubby, I\'ll tell you the same thing I told him. If it only has sentimental value, then take a picture of it with you holding it and start a sentimental picture album - then toss the item.

uumm... yeah - well - that went over well - and no we don\'t have a sentimental album. So my next strategy was to toss it when he wasn\'t around. If he didn\'t see it - he didn\'t remember it. That worked a little, till he saw some of the items in the garbage can. What finally worked was we got down to the wire and had to be out of the old house and there was no more room in the new house. He had no choice but to start tossing out. It was painful for him, but he did it and in the end he was actually glad he did it. You will be too!
Just don\'t go grabbin your stuff out of little old ladies hands and you will do fine. And make a rule - once in the garage, the choice is over!!! (And when I finally get around to de-cluttering here, remind me of all my good advice - will you?)

I love these posts Paula,

Probably as it is something other than PD to identify with, or maybe as it is such a battle in our house too. As we intend to downsize throwing things out, charity shops

What happened there? This new iPad I could frisbee it out of the window, it is clearly not meant for someone with PD!

As I was saying .... And the eventual car boot sale are all things we are doing now too. I throw everything out while Ross is not around, we haven\'t even whittled it down to the sentimental stuff (I leave that until last as I get caught up in all of the memories that the afternoon slips by and I haven\'t got anywhere - it\'s great fun though) no we are still squabbling over whether you can fit into clothing hidden at the back of the wardrobe or not, it\'s not attractive! Keep up the good work with the clearance and the best of luck with your results tomorrow.

CM has some excellent ideas. My wife likes to hang on to things. Me If it wasn\'t my dad\' or grandfather\'s I can throw it/sell or give away. I like he clean and empty look myself. My son just bought a house with his girlfriend? (not married with no plans of marriage) so I\'m not quite how that\'s gong to work out. But he has had stuff stored here forever. He\'s 33. So my wife has been on him about getting stuff out of the garage and basement. That will help a great deal. He is a high school shop teacher, wood, metal, welding.etc. and on the weekends he \"has\" to go ducking hunting to get unstressed. Plus he\'s working on his Master Degree. So I understand. But it would be nice. to have it gone. Goood luck on your test results Paula.

When you figure out a system to \"let go\", let me know. I have a basement full of boxes of \"stuff\" that hasn\'t been touched since we moved in 7 yrs ago. I\'ve thought of just sealing up each box without looking inside, and then having a \"grab box\" garage sale.....each box for $20 sight unseen. I don\'t see what got sold and the buyer can\'t see what they got until home. However, I probably won\'t do that either. My winter project is to clear out the basement, so I suspect Salvation Army or Good Will will be the receiver of most of it. Good luck on your project and the results on your stress test. Hugs, Dan

Years ago my wife went away for the weekend and my daughter and I tossed a ton of crap she head been hoarding in the basement. When she got home she was sure mad about it but it turned out I tossed only 2 things that really upset her. One was a glitter covered new years eave table cneter peice. The other was a plastic drawer from a refridgerator. It turned out to belong in the fridge in our kitchen. She was experimenting with a different layout. Within a year te empty space was of course refilled. Good luck, Alex

Ha thank you all for all the advice... I was obsessed today and took tons of things out to the garage. What i did do was take one empty nice sized bin and decided that if i absolutely can\'t part with something and the memories attached to it i will put it in that bin but once that is filled that\'s it so i have to be selective. I put some things in it but there is still some room in it . It makes me feel better that i can hang on to at least some of the memories. But i\'m still afraid i\'ll be grabbing things out of peoples hands as they try to buy them hahaha... i told my husband he has to control me there!!
