My Birthday
Today is my birthday and I would like to share what has happened these past few days. For two days prior to today, I was mad as an ole' wet hen! I was mad because my daughter sent me a text (#1 irritant) saying I would like to propose me coming out after church on Sunday (11:30) for a couple hrs. x,y,z! I was pissed. How dare she "work" my birthday into her busy schedule. I reciprocated and said I wasn't sure what my plans were yet and if she had plans, go ahead and do them as I could not give her a definitive answer. My son, who mentions last week he may come out after work, didn't call till this a.m.
Anyway, this morning I awoke with such a joy filled heart and an epiphany of how grateful I am for this past years inner growth! It's been very challenging at times; but the rewards have been awesome. I thought how dedicated I am to my healing journey and the courage and strength it takes to stay on this path. I thought how I give my children permission to be where they are and no longer lay guilt trips on them. I thought of how I am learning to have a voice and speak up in a kind compassionate way. I thought of how my passion has come to fruition; 2 spiritual classes in my home. Many, many, more! My joy and gratitude were almost overwhelming!
As I thought on this, I decided to let today unfold as it may; the exterior celebration of my birthday was really not important! My sister called at 8 a.m and wants me to come over as her grandkids are here from the Washington. My daughter called and is going to come by and drop a present , and my son just called and is going to take me out to eat after work.....Wow!
Another gift I was aware of is the blessing of knowing all my friends here on DS. In the past year, you have helped me more than you will know. I look forward to this year! Thank you so much!
Namaste!

Happy Birthday Vicki,
I had to smile in recognition of your statement of, \"How dare she work my birthday into her busy schedule,\" for I had a similar experience with my son but on mother\'s day.
I expected him to drive down to spend the day with me. When he called to tell me he was going to a wedding instead I felt hurt. My son walked me through the obvious with great patience.
-it was one of his best friends
-it was a wedding, not a weekend gad-about
-it was a one-time event
etc.,
But the real reel-in was when he said, \"Mom, it\'s a \'Hallmark\' day!
That was a wake-up call and it told me exactly to what extent I had bought into our cultural. Mother\'s day was indeed an event created by someone else--it wasn\'t really about me, though I am a mother.
My son helped me to realize that to the extent I make things about me so too do I put myself at risk for both joy and pain.
Now I know that I am more than Mother\'s Days or Birthdays or Holidays and what a relief it has become not to tie my self-worth to society\'s values or to the behaviors of others.
Makes me smile to realize my son had to deliver this message to me--his elder. LOL.
Well, life is full of wonderful little surprises and gifts isn\'t it. Do enjoy your birthday and every other day as well.
xx
P.S.
I also learned how \"expecting\" others to act is a trap. A big one!
Happy birthday to you!!! Yes, it\'s funny how things sometimes work themselves out, if you just let them.
The internal Birthday is much more important than the external but both sound like they are going to be great!
You are a very valued and wise friend. The support you\'ve given me has been immense. Have a wonderful, wonderful day!!
Xxx
Happy Birthday Vicki! I am so happy to hear about how your day has turned out!
I have been gradually learning to make special occasions special for me in my own way. It has been a difficult but worthwhile journey :D
It feels like complete and utter freedom when you can shed all those expectations and have a great day all because YOU intended to do just that :D
Hi Vicki,
More Birthday Wishes from CT! How wonderful that you chose to let the day unfold, and find the many blessings that were waiting for you.
Hugs,
Shari
