1 down, 1 to go
Well, my son & I visited the first of 2 therapists we're considering last night. She was definitely nice; a bit talkative, but in a way that's good, since she made the session seem very conversational with my son. Though she's said she's worked with teens before, she seems to approach him like he's younger (though not in a condescending way, if that makes any sense). I think my son is more comfortable with her than with the guy he's spent 9 months with! But I'm not sure if she's aware of the depth of the issues my son has. I gave her a packet of journal-like documentation of our past year--that should help. In any case, therapist #2's appointment is Sunday afternoon. I liked her on the phone. Let's see what my son thinks. I want him to be comfortable, but at the same time to address his defiance & noncompliance. On a personal level, I've learned something about myself after talking to my sister yesterday. She gets kind of critical (& she probably means well), and I start shutting down - I don't need her criticism! I realized later that although nothing she said was untrue, I was already aware of it. I am my own worst critic, after all. What I want is emotional support. Looking in the mirror, I need to be less critical & more supportive of others as well.
