I am glad I read your post. I have been through a similar ordeal. My fiancée and I have 2 small children together and they were 1 and 3 when he died. We had plans to be married but never made it to the wedding day. His family was awful to me. and because we weren't married they got to make all the decisions while he was dying in the hospital and refused to let him be buried in California where we live. to this day my children and I have never seen his grave. I had to hire lawyers to fight them in probate court which was an utter nightmare. it has been 2 years now and I have paid 14 thousand dollars in lawyer fees for probate court to handle my kids estate. They fought me every step of the way. It is absolutely heart breaking to know that they have so little respect for me as his fiancée. Not to mention his mother got over 160K in death benefit money and promptly changed her number after. It has made it very hard to grieve. Things eventually get easier but I still have my emotional days. Good luck to you and I know what you mean about having your things in order before you die. regardless of age. I would never want my kids or family to go through this if I died.
