Anyone know how to break in to proofreading? I'm reading several books on the subject and doing work for free for friends. I am also taking a few courses through Coursera to upgrade and remember grammar, sentence structure, etc. I also bought the AP style guide book for the stuff that I either don't know or can't remember.

I think it's about networking. Stay involved and let people know you are a proofreader/editor. I edited a movie screenplay, as a volunteer. Just getting out there and promoting ourselves would help.

You probably can inquire at the local newspaper, neighborhood newspaper, and even free newspapers they give away for a proof reading job. I think they give you a test to see how fast you can read and what accuracy you can achieve.
