Romans 5:1-11 ( Quoted from the NLT)
1-2 “Therefore, since we have been made right in God’s sight by faith, we have peace with God because of what Jesus Christ our Lord has done for us. (2) Because of our faith, Christ brought us into this place of undeserved privilege where we now stand, and we confidently and joyfully look forward to sharing God’s glory.
3-5 “We rejoice too when we run into problems and trials, for we know that they help us develop endurance. (4) And endurance develops strength of character, and character strengthens our confident hope of salvation. (5) And this hope will not lead to disappointment. For we know how dearly God loves us, because he has given us the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with love.”
6-11 “When we were utterly helpless, Christ came at just the right time and died for us sinners. (7) Now most people would not be willing to die for an upright person, but though someone might perhaps be willing to die for a person who is especially good. (8) But God showed his love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners. (9) And since we have been made right in God’s sight by the blood of Christ, he will certainly save us from God’s condemnation. (10) For since our friendship with God has been restored by the death of his Son while we were still enemies, we will certainly be saved through the life of his Son. (11) So now we can rejoice in our wonderful new relationship with God because our Lord Jesus has made us friends of God.”
My comments: Because of our FAITH (not our works) we have peace with God through Jesus. We will still have to endure trials and problems, but those challenges will build character in us, so we should rejoice when challenges happen because the character it builds will strengthen our confidence of Salvation. Our hope for salvation will never be disappointed, and God’s has given us the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with love.
I think verse 6-11 are an amazing demonstration of God's grace and mercy towards us. While we were STILL stuck in our sins and we were ungodly people, God sent Jesus to die for us. We certianly didn't deserve that grace or mercy. And because of Jesus sacrifice, we have been made right with God, and we won’t be condemned. I like the way the NIV words verse 9 “Since we have now been justified by his blood, how much more will we be saved from God’s wrath through him.” Now that our relationship with God has been restored through Jesus (not because of anything we did other than have faith), we can rejoice! I think that’s truly amazing.
Vv3-5 are verses I've turned to many times in my life.
Isaiah 61:3 (KJV) "To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for our mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, that he might be glorified."
When we go through unfair things in life, God will make it work out for our good. He will give us beauty for our ashes, and joy for our mourning, so that He will be glorified.
