Romans 13:8-14 (Quoted from NLT)

8-10 “Owe nothing to anyone—except for your obligation to love one another. If you love your neighbor, you will fulfill the requirements of God’s law. (9) For the commandments say, ‘You must not commit adultery. You must not murder. You must not steal. You must not covet.’ These—and other commandments—are summed up in one commandment: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself’ (10) Love does no wrong to others, so love fulfills the requirements of God’s law.”

11-14 “This all the more urgent, for you know how late it is, time is running out. Wake up, for our salvation is nearer now than it was when we first believed. (12) The night is almost gone; the day of salvation will soon be here. So remove your dark deeds like dirty clothes, and put on shining armor of right living. (13) Because we belong to day, and we live decent lives for all to see. Don’t participate in darkness of wild parties and drunkenness, or in sexual promiscuity and immoral living, or in quarreling and jealousy. (14) Instead, clothe yourself with the presence of the Lord Jesus Christ! And don’t let yourself think about ways to indulge your evil desires.”

My Comments: We are to owe nothing to anyone, with the exception of the obligation to love each other. We will be fulfilling all of the requirements of the Law and the 10 commandments if we love our neighbor, because all of the commandments are summed up in just one comment: Love your neighbor as yourself. Love doesn’t do any wrong to others, so love fulfills all the requirements of God’s law. The day of salvation is coming soon, so we should get rid of our evil deeds and remove them like dirty clothes. We should replace them with a robe of right living as an example for others to see. We shouldn’t live in sin like the world, but we should clothe ourselves with the presence of Jesus, and not think about ways to indulge our evil desires.

I agree. The 10 commandments are repeated here for Christians, and if we followed the commandment to love our neighbors as ourselves, we would be following the rest of the commandments which are important for a God fearing, stable society

Yes, they are repeated, but verse 9 and 10 says"...These—and other commandments—are summed up in one commandment: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself’ (10) Love does no wrong to others, so love fulfills the requirements of God’s law.” I don't think the point was to repeat the commandments, but to say that if you love people, then you will be fulfilling the commandments. I think the whole emphasis of this passage was on love.

Maybe I should clarify that I don't think God gave us the Law to teach us how to behave, but to stir up sin and show us how much we need a Savior. I know most people would will not agree and think that statement is crazy, but I believe that's what Scripture tells us. Romans 5:20 (KJV) says, "Moreover the law entered THAT THE OFFENSE MIGHT ABOUND...." Paul says in Romans 7:8-9 (KJV) "...For without the law sin was dead, (9) For I was alive without the law once, but when the commandment came, SIN REVIVED, and I died." In verse 7 he says he didn't even know lust until the commandment told him not to covet, and that's when lust came alive in him. In 2 Corinthians the 10 commandments are referred to as the ministry of death in and the ministry of condemnation. (2 Corinthians 3:7 and 9). As I said, I know others will not agree with me, but I know it is human nature that any time you tell someone not to do something, that is the first thing people want to do. I heard a story about a backyard birthday party. All the kids were told not to spit on a particular flower in the yard. Then someone sat inside and watched out the window, almost every single kid at the party spit on the flower before it was over. Most of the 10 commandments are all worded "Thou shalt not..." As I said, Romans 5:20 tells us the law entered so that sin would abound. I didn't say that, Paul said it. He also told us the reason for the law was to show us how sinful we are many times. I believe that's why under the New Covenant we are told many times over and over that if we love our neighbors then we will be fulfilling the commandments. Telling people to love, does not stir up sin like telling someone NOT to do something. Of course we are not to break any of the commandments, and if we do that is sin, and God hates sin, but telling us to love others if far more effective in changing ones behavior in a positive way, than telling them not to do something. The rules are the same, but how it is worded makes a huge difference. That was one of the first things I was taught in school when working with kids. Always tell them what you want, never what you don't want, and I believe that's why love is emphasized over and over in the New Testament. I don't expect anyone to agree with me, but those are my thoughts and my beliefs.

I like your examples Jeane, Yes, I used to be a teacher, but not a grade school or high school teacher. I have a degree in Early Childhood Education as well as an infant/toddler credential. I taught preschool. and I worked with kids ages 5 and under for 17 years., I no longer work due to an illness, but I miss it.

I'm sorry to hear about your health issues, but I'm glad you recovered enough to take care of yourself. That's great that we have a connection :) I found teaching to be very rewarding.
