Last night my husband drank too much, had a facebook flamewar with his ex-girlfriend, beat the crap out of our dog, and threw two chairs across the room.
I can't believe this is happening to me. He is a very successful, stable person. He's a surgeon with a thriving practice. We have three kids.
He feels like the whole world is against the medical community right now, and he feels villified by the media, obama, and the liberal left. He is extremely unhappy with the state of health care and I hear about it...all the time... Last year we paid over 60% in taxes. Add 10% to church, 20% to savings & insurance, and we are left with not much more to live on than the teacher down the street. He feels like he is drowning.
I am in my 3rd week of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for treatment of major recurrent depression and generalized anxiety disorder. Have been on every anti-depressant, anti-anxiety drug known to man, and my MD finally decided i needed to try something different than psychotherapy and drugs. The CBT is extremely laborious, but I'm finding it effective. However last night was a major setback for me.
Today I am in agony over the violent scene, and no matter how much I try to focus on the facts, the emotional turmoil is taking over.
Question: How do you avoid triangulation when you just need to talk things through with someone other than your partner? Feeling isolated is making this problem seem so insurmountable. I would like nothing better than to call a friend and chat, but I feel like I would be dragging someone else into a private matter between me and my husband.

All the behaviors that would help me soothe myself out of this situation are counterproductive...i am trying to think of something to do that will help me climb out of this pit today. Mostly I just need to tell someone what happened last night, because it was really scary.

From what you've experienced....it seems that your husband is on the verge of snapping. I think you should speak with a professional (therapist/counselor), because you could be in danger. Your husband is reacting to his troubles in a very hostile way, and I hope you don't become his "punching bag." He has absolutely no right to beat up the dog either. He needs serious help. Your children must also be protected from his temper and abuse, so stand up for them, and tell someone before it's too late.
