In the small community that we live in Veterans Day is observed in this way. The flags are put up along the small Main Street. The local school has a ceremony to honor the Veterans. The Veterans who live locally and some Veterans from other towns attend the ceremony. Little gifts are made and given to each Veteran. The gifts are made up by the students in grades K.-12. Cards saying thank you and colored by the youngest to necklaces made up in Indian tradition from the older students. Poems are read and distributed.. It is a really lovely and meaningful ceremony. Then on the actual day, adult volunteers are around Main Street giving out the red poppy flowers.
On a personal note. My Man is an officer in the group Oregon Coast Veterans Association. This is a motorcycle group. Most years we have a meet for coffee after the ceremony at our home. One year, I was really moved. Two of the members said that it was the first time since Nam that they were told Thank You for their service. Both of the men were deeply touched by their experience. I will never forget that day.
