Amazingly, there was a time when neither the
Republican nor the Democratic parties existed.
Even more amazingly, Presidents did in
fact come from other parties back in the day.
The last time this happened was in 1868, when President Andrew Johnson
finished out Abraham Lincoln’s second term under the National Union label,
which Lincoln was also a part of.
Some historians consider the National Union part of the Republicans, as
they were an offshoot created in 1864 by dissenters who felt that war was
necessary and that Lincoln was awesome (by that time, Republicans had
soured on both.)
By 1868, the NU had dissolved and merged into the Republicans,
adding fuel to the idea that NU was always part of the Republican Party.
However, despite revisionist history, they were very much their own short-lived group.
