In some cases some people are clinically depressed as a result of a chemical imbalance. Whether or not medication is the only thing that can help them, it's something that some people debate, but the medical community strongly recommends antidepressants.
I guess my depression doesn't fall into that category, since I don't take any medication, and I have learned to (a) Identify when I'm feeling depressed, (b) Identify the "type of depression" I am experiencing, and (c) What to do AND NOT DO when I feel depressed.
I have noticed that st times my depression is the result of physical problems, ranging from not processing food properly to an ear infection. Not feeling well physically depresses me.
Sometimes my depression comes from feeling isolated, so I break isolation (try to do it in a healthy way) by contacting a person I know, texting a friend or family member, or reaching or in one way or another.
Sometimes I'm depressed for feeling angry at something (life, relationships, work, family, feeling cheated by life, etc). For that I found that activity is the best antidepressant. I start cleaning the house, or getting involved in some activity. When I am so depressed that I don't even have energy to clean the house, I simply make the goal of getting up and take a shower, or just getting up and do my bed.
What i do not do when I'm depressed is (a) shopping, (b) cruising, (c) making any important decision, (d) actively participate in staff meetings (e) cross path with people I don't necessarily like (f) eat junk food, (g) look for work (h) pretend [to myself] that everything is OK (i) watch TV
