My father just went back to Iraq to work there. He was there before the repeal but this is his first time back since it took place. I may have to ask him later how things are with it.

I was on a discussion board for a major news site when they were repealing DADT and there was this woman who posted an absurd comment on there. She said, "my husband is in the military and I don't want the homosexuals looking at him in a sexual way when they should be shooting the enemy." WTF?

I told her that her husband really shouldn't flatter himself. Seriously doubt he's that good looking anyway.

all i have to say on this one is watch the movie "A Soldiers Girl." It tells the story of PVT First Class. Barry Winchell who was brutally bulged to death in his sleep at Fort Campbell in TN during the early hours of July 5th 1999. Winchell had been harassed horribly by his fellow soldiers for having fallen in love with a male to female transgendered individual. The movie is a dramatization of sorts of the actual events that took place leading up to the slaying. The movie in my mind is amazing, That's part of why I say that even with DADT having been repealed homosexuality is still dangerous in the military. I say homosexuality as the Transgendered individual in the case i mentioned above hadn't completed the process to becoming a women.

It always amazes me how quickly traditions get established. What people forget that homosexuality in the US forces was not banned until 1942 when the recruitment problem was solved. Prior to that the military had no problem with homosexuality. Personally I would have thought that opening up the forces of both genders would have caused more disruption than the existing homosexuality.

So the resistance to homosexuality in the armed forces is IDK difficult to comprehend --- no one bothered before or in combat where high levels of casualties could be expected --- but in peace time or when there are few casualties lets have a which hunt. It is stupid.

DADT like DOMA infringes the constitutional rights of those whom it discriminates against. The right to serve as a citizen--- presumably homosexuals are not bared from the states militias that require membership of all males as defined by the state or commonwealths constitution. DOMA infringes the constitution by aggregating to the Federal Government a right to determine what a marriage is ---- A right reserved fully to the States. The Federal Government cannot choose to ignore a legal marriage recognized by a State. But then the constitution has been ignored upon many occasions.

The problem of a written constitution is that what it means is decided by a few judges who are appointed because they are politically acceptable rather than by blind ballot. And constitutions are very hard to alter.

I think the repeal is still not in full effect, legally speaking that is. The law is not going to make homophobes any less homophobes. Remember, there's no way to legislate attitude, so I don't expect a large embracing of the LGBT service men and women. My guess is that there will start forming alliances, and there will be a few incidents and even lawsuits. It's not going to be paradise, and it will be a process of adjustment.

The good thing is that with the 'don;t ask don;y tell' homophobes have less ammunition against those of us inside.

@Andy2011: True but it seems to have worked OK in the UK armed forces when homosexuality was legalised a few years back.

I think people should be allowed to be themselves everywhere even in the millitary.

The point of ending the DADT is that people's sexual orientation shouldn't matter, and it shouldn't be legislated. That's different from the perception that many people seem to have, that repealing DADT means that lgbt service members are going to have an lgbt march at the frontlines and are going to be on people's faces "acting gay" (whatever that means, anyway).

The repeal of the don't ask don't tell is a major blow against the biggots. YAY!
