Is he or she a sociopath or psychopath? Think we're only talking about serial killers here? Psychopaths, sociopaths and even narcissists come in every walk of life, every career level, and every socio-economic category.
Two weeks ago my XS managed to get me bad, really bad. I was over the top upset and couldn't really think for a couple of days. Today we talked and she was calm and even. But, started saying how she missed me and loved me and wanted to get back together. I didn't bite this time, I told her I couldn't believe her because of her pattern of behavior. Boy was I proven right. A couple of hours later it was nothing but vituperative drivel. She did just exactly as always and even though it hurts, I'm not out of sorts. After I sleep I know I will be fine. Baby steps I guess ...
Good for you! It can take a lot to learn these lessons sometimes. I have spent years trying to learn mine, going from one bad relationship to the next with Narcissists, sociopaths, you name it! But I too feel like I'm finally starting to learn. Now at the hint of red flags I cut and run. A normal decent person isn't going to display major red flags on a first or second date! In the past I used to make justifications and give the benefit of the doubt only to find that my initial gut instinct was right from the beginning.
With socios they have such an ability to manipulate, it makes our heads spin! But when you can start to emotionally detach from them and the reactions they try to get out of you, the power shifts in your favor. Good job on staying out of the trap. It definitely takes baby steps in the beginning but soon those baby steps start to turn into leaps and bounds as you frogger your way outta there! lol :)
