Is he or she a sociopath or psychopath? Think we're only talking about serial killers here? Psychopaths, sociopaths and even narcissists come in every walk of life, every career level, and every socio-economic category.
There are typically two kinds of Narcs: the Cerebral and the Somatic. The latter uses their body as a tool for self gratification and manipulation of others, whereas the former uses their mind to obtain praise and assert their dominance over the world.
Although nearly every Narcissist is a little of both, most will have a preference for which tactic they employ the most. A Cerebral Narcissist is one who would much rather memorize obscure information, use big, complex words, and write long, drawn out essays on their "revolutionary ideas". Not surprisingly, these people will also feel "entitled" (like all narcissists) to intellectual prestige, even if their ideas and or reasoning are completely stupid.
And stupid they are.
If we do some reading and apply some common-sense, we see that lack of self-esteem and possibly self-hatred are at the core of narcissism; whether they believe they really are as smart, pretty, or whatever they claim they are is not the issue--the reason they go about trying to flaunt it is because they are trying to prove--firstly to themselves, then the rest of the world--that they truly deserve praise, admiration, and special treatment. They try to hide what's really going on inside them.
And what is the Cerebral Narcissist hiding? That they're actually a shallow, fluff-brained idiot that's really good at seeming intelligent.
Reasons vary, of course; maybe they were called stupid all their life, and now, thinking they really are, try their best to prove that they're not, despite the fact that they want gain without pain. The Riddler, from the Batman mediums, is an example of a cerebral narcissist in popular culture; the riddler was bullied, called stupid by his father, and now seeks to prove his alleged intelligence at the expense, and lives, of others.
Another reason may be a kind of reverse concept of the Somatic Narcissist: thinking they are ugly, unworthy of physical love, they seek to get back at the world they believe hates them by condescending their intellects and feeling "smart".
I mentioned before that, in my experience anyway, that narcissists will claim stupid things no rational person would buy. In the case of the cerebral narc, they might say "I have an IQ of 180" even though they regularly misuse words, apply faulty logic of their own, "flawless" design, and admittedly have learning disabilities (yes, I'm describing someone I knew).
Though I'm not sure what to think of him as clinically, my father certainly displayed/displays many self-promoting, "look at me" type behaviors; he believes the Gibson-Les Paul brand of guitar to be inherently "broken" and once believed (still believes?) he can "fix" it by placing a ludicrous device that he of course invented onto the head of the guitar. Needless to say, no one took the idea seriously.

I never respected him, because I saw how submissive he was with men, and what a tyrant and bully he was with women and children. He was a "tough guy", but only around people who couldn't stand up to him for some reason, like his children. Seems like we've been hearing about whole countries full of these little tyrants who rule their wives and children with an iron fist, while in their interactions with the rest of the world they're scared of their own shadows.
Control games are an addiction that seems to be a characteristic of weak, cowardly people. People who have strength of character boost their self-esteem by substantive accomplishment, not by beating down and tormenting someone who can't fight back, or inventing phony resumes of their great deeds and superior intellect.
The person I knew/know/can't forget makes up words like "subconscience" and then acts as though its either a real word or a word their "genius" should justify making into a word. A smile came to my face when they misused the word "logistics" as a synonym for "logic". She also used to refer to herself as a "self-proclaimed genius", but later said that her genius was documented.
