Is he or she a sociopath or psychopath? Think we're only talking about serial killers here? Psychopaths, sociopaths and even narcissists come in every walk of life, every career level, and every socio-economic category.
According to my experience they do eventually go away for the most part, though not completely. I've had flashbacks frequently for a couple of years, but I experience them now only when something that reminds me of a forgotten painful experience triggers them.
They have eased in time. I still get intrusive thoughts and go over memories unexpectedly...but I feel like now I cope with them better. They aren't half as painful and are less debilitating.
I don't know if those memories will ever go away completely....sometimes I wish they would...but at other times I'm thankful because those are the memories I need to remind myself why I am trying to remain no contact.
Flashbacks are painful but not impossible to conquer.
PTSD is triggered by having constantly lived in survival mode for a long period of time, due to being on the receiving end of trauma and psychological (and sometimes physical) abuse. It does all kinds of warped stuff to the mind. It should pass over time, at the very least it will get less terrifying, and easier to manage.
