Trisomy 18 (Edwards Syndrome) Support Group
Trisomy 18 or Edwards Syndrome is a genetic disorder. Edwards Syndrome can result in characteristic physical abnormalities and significant developmental delays. For this reason a full-term Edwards syndrome baby may exhibit the breathing and feeding difficulties of a premature baby.
I lost my little boy at 18 weeks 5 days gestation 1/17/10. I had a picture perfect preagnacy and have 2 healthy little girls so to find out that my baby boy had no heartbeat durring a routine checkup was devestating and shocking. I guess it does not really matter to have the answers as nothing will bring back my Timothy but for closure I would like to know
I went to my 6 week checkup yesterday after my loss and I was hoping to have some type of a answer a Yes this is what caused your Timothys death but I really did not get that. My OB came in with my chart and said my babys chromosonal test did not grow so they were not able to determine anything from that. the autopsy came back inconclusive. He told me that it is in his best desion to deturmine that it was the cord as it was wraped so tight 3 times however in the same breath he said that my bloodwork taken 30 min prior to seeing him to find no heartbeat came back postive for trisomy 18. He said however I am almost certin that it was not that because I fully examined timothy and he did not have any of the physical signs. so dont worry about that. He feels that it came back postive due to my timothy alrady being dead in the womb for several days prior. he said the test is ran by levels in the womb that were decreased due to the death.
I came home wanting a answer wanting to know why and searched the internet and found that yes in fact trisomy 18 babys do have physical signs but some do not have any noticable signs.
Is he just trying to make me not worry? is he in a way trying to protect me or my feelings I just do not know . I tried to question him about it and he said Stella it is in my best opion and in my heart that it was not that as I began to question him more he said no I am sure dont worry about it. He continused to say ( in a very senstive and selective manor) you are healthy and I know I will soon see you in here again to carry a healthy little one dont worry. he has been my ob for several years now and he deleverd my 11 month old, he is always very diligent to follow up on proper care so I just do not know. He was very senstive with this and even spoke about my baby by Name. I feel comfortable that he will and has provided proper care.
I guess it just really does not matter ether way for it will not bring my Timothy back and if it was trisomy 18 that is almost always fatal but I just wish I knew.

I am praying for you that you can come to terms with what happened even though your doctor can't tell you for sure. Stay strong. I find comfort in knowing that my miscarriage was set off by the amino they did and that we didn't have to make the choice that Irnsbrg is facing to do more testing or terminate.
