Chronic pain can disrupt people's daily routines and activities. Tasks like cooking, shopping, housework, gardening and DIY are often difficult and can cause an increase in pain and fatigue.
Whilst most people felt that their lives were now limited, many had found ways of making their daily tasks more manageable by approaching them in a different way. Some had learnt to manage their activities and minimise pain by prioritising tasks, setting goals and pacing (see also 'Pain management: pacing and goal setting'). People had also picked up tips to make tasks easier.
Coping with the pain occupies people's minds and energy and many people commented that their concentration and memory where not as good as they used to be. This affected their ability to do everyday tasks particularly things that involved reading and learning new skills. Several people said they now needed to write lists or keep a diary. One woman said her mother had bought her a whiteboard to help her remember important things.
Housework was often limited and some people found it hard to lower their previously high standards. However, others preferred to save their energy for work socialising and exercise. Others got help from friends and family or paid a cleaner for particularly strenuous jobs such as hoovering, cleaning windows, cleaning the bath and changing beds.
Some found they could do these jobs by pacing themselves and waiting for a good day. Tips people had which made jobs easier including cleaning the bath or shower while in it, pulling the vacuum cleaner backwards, splitting up heavy loads, dropping laundry down the stairs rather than carrying it, using a stool to avoid over stretching and sitting down to iron.

What do you do to manage life when your in pain?
Right now I am lucky I have the boys to help when things are really bad, but then I start feeling guilty that they are doing "my" chores while I'm layed up in bed doing nothing. I hate it!
Believe it or not one of the hardest things for me sometimes is laundry.....lifting heavy wet towels kills my fingers and back. So I use my washer as a laundry basket....when it's full I turn it on. Get the boys to put them in the dryer for me and take them out when they are dry then I can sit on the bed and fold.
That shower cleaner is the best.....the one you spray in your shower after each use really helps keep the shower clean longer.
I clean the barroom every time I go in there.....I do one single chore. I keep all the bathroom cleaning supplies under the sink. S it stays clean and I don't have to exhaust myself by cleaning it all at once.
Thank the good lord for dishwashers !!!!!!!
I also made my life easier with all leather furniture....especially with having pets.
Those aren't the best tips but its what I have......
How do you manage? Tips? Tricks? Favorite cleaning product? HELP!!!:)

So mad at Xfinity! They're trying to charge me $115 per month for the same service I had been paying $50 the last four years. I took the equipment to UPS for shipping and cancelled my subscription today! Next door was a cookie shop called Crumbl. I had heard of it before but never went in until today. I don't need one more sugar fix, but maybe it will help with my sad) grieving heart....$15...

Good post! I don't have carpets in my home anymore because I have dogs and animals shed and that means vacuming and handling a big ol vacuum. A broom and swifter to wash is much more manageable, BUT, a Roomba which goes around and vacuums your house for you is awesome. It gets in under the spots you would normally miss.
Also, I have a townhouse and so a small back yard so I have a patio and I bricked the rest. The result is no grass to cut and no big mower to wrangle. All my greenery is in pots and I can move them around as I want. I just have to water on hot days but that is meditative.
i use a lot of the tips mentioned. even on the best of days i stop for breaks in between chores, esp ones that are fairly strenuous which is just about everything now. i use a bar stool in the kitchen. on bad days (since i don't have an eat-in kitchen or even table) i bring my cutting board to the sofa with several bowls for what i'm chopping. i'm a clean cook.
a very small apt helps. others things are
i sit in a camp chair to work on my plants - a balcony garden. my cat litter is between my vanity and toilet so i can clean the litter sitting down. i have a bathmat under it to control litter.
i do clean the bathtub while i'm in it and now have a light weight vacuum that has a detachable hand vac. i stay really organized b/c i can't waste energy looking for things. my most dreaded chores are dishes and laundry...both are so hard, so i break both up. i also cook in batches and freeze portions. vastly important is that i've relaxed my standards from my almost OCD days - good enough is my new standard.
where is the article or group you mentioned or was it a post. i'd like to read it.
that i have to maintain, keep dry & debug. i have to brush pets everyday and make sure to take their little blankets & beds they have out to shake, beat & lysol spray. it's makin me tired to type it all coz there's lots more.
Serenity we def. have to lower our standards don't we.:(
Knotquithere I too don't have carpet. Thank goodness I don't have to push a heavy vacuum !
I have also seriously decluttered over the years. I don't have knickknack that collect extra dust. And minimum furniture.
& you know, i don't miss cleaning any of it.
This is not so much a tip but an opinion.......I hate carpet! Wood floor's and tile or so much easier. I can talk on the phone......as I always did....and clean those floors....with no noise. :-) And it's soo much cleaner.
I am sooo wanting to minimalize. (sp?) I keep trying. There is just sooo much crap here that I don't need. Goodwill is getting to know me by name. :-)

I live alone and must do it all myself. Once in a while my brother helps me with the major stuff. He does my tub for me every now and then.
I don't know where to begin. I take lots of breaks. My back has been "going out" on me quite a bit lately. the spasms are very painful. Right now, I face a sink of dishes, vacuuming, the litter box, garbage night, 3 loads of laundry and much more. I break into tears at times. I just have to keep plugging my way through the chores.
My standards went out the window quite a while ago. I can see we are not alone with this mountain we have to climb. I am going to try to do one major task each day. gotta keep fighting
Thanks again, Dix. I got some ideas.
