I was lying awake for 2 hours this night and said outloud to myself "I hurt so much", just as my son entered my bedroom and said "I'm sorry". He sat on my bed, as he sometimes does before he goes to sleep and wants to talk. I asked him what is on his mind. He told me about the domestic violence and fear that his young girlfriend is going through right now and is looking for answers. She is from the Ukraine so some of it is her step father threatening to send her back, as well as pulling her hair and pushing her around. I urged him to get her to call the Children's health line to get the real answers that she needs. We went to his computer and got the phone number and I showed him the confidentuality of it.
It gets more involved than this because last week, her exboyfriend sent her an anonymous email saying he was going to rape her, but she refused to tell her parents for fear of their reaction, so my son (they are both 16) took it to the Principal who started an investigation. Then my son took it further and cornered this fellow and made him apologize (by this time the boy was pretty worried about hearing there was an investigation and he might be expelled)
So my son asked if his girlfriend has a safe place here to move in is she gets kicked out. Well sheesh, two hormonal teens under one roof (I make a joke). I don't know either parents at all and I am relying on information from my son. As for myself, I was married in an abusive relationship for 20 years and was afraid to leave. When I did, it took a year and a half of threats and stalking to get out safely and with my life and the life of my sons. The day I was planning to escape to a safe house was when he finally relented to let me go finally and that was after my doctor had drugged him heavily for a month as part of our marraige counselling therapy. Plus, just this year, I had to kick out my boyfriend for his failed attempt at being a stepfather that resulted in hitting my son. We are still working on being a couple, but we have to live at seperate residences. and only see each other on weekends now. Jim is at least making amends.
But, I have been through emotional hell this last year as I've had to take a good hard look at myself and my role in allowing others to treat me like shit and crossing boundries. I have learned a lot on this subject. and still have much to learn. I realize that I will never be healed of my abuse issues because I was born into it. My mother and I still are at odds (another story)
So anyways, there is no way that I can just say, 'not our problem" if someone vulnerable asks for help. But I'm not a friggen hero either. Taking on a 16 year old girl solves nothing and just makes me a target. I told my son that he must first get his girlfriend to call this help line and ask questions and search for facts. Then I want to talk to her. If she is being physically bruised, she must call the police. If she is not safe at all and has no family to take her in, then I need to talk to the mother. See what makes the mother tick. Listen to her and see if she has any unreasonable fears. She does come from another country so maybe she is unclear as to her rights, or maybe she is somewhere where I was once and just hasn't found her voice.
I don't know. I do know that everytime I try to block this situation out, it just gets louder and its not going away. I don't want to take in another teenager and the mother has to be empowered. The mother doesn't even know about the rape threat and I can relate to the girl not telling her because when I was 15, a stranger tried to throw me in the bushes and had cut my lip kissing me and I never told either. (I just carried a small knife for years after that)
So is this God putting someone in my path that I should help, which would be good, because then it means I have a chance to be successful, OR, because my son comes from an abused home and loves his abused mother, he seeks out an abused female and I'm stuck trying to fix it because he doesn't have the maturity to do it?
I just feel like there is this new weight on my shoulders that I just could do without right now. I'm trying to pull away from helping others and focusing on healing myself for a change, which to me, I consider selfish, but there is no way I can stand by and ignore a young girls cry for help if it is authentic. How do I know it is authentically a horrible situation? By what standards? Who am I to decide if a parent is too rough or not? What if my personal experiences are too muddled into this and it's not as bad as I've been led to beleive?
I have to be up for work in 5 hours and my head is killing me still. I've taken all the drugs I can safely take tonight so I'm going to end this now and I hope by the time I open this, you guys might have some sage advise to give me.
Thanks for listening

88FWhat I do like is early morning clouds and then they disappear and the sun comes out. That was it's cooler in the morning. I'm sitting here looking out the window at the hummingbird with the river and dike as a back drop. It's hard to invision ever leaving but I'm also a realist with aging, especially when the luncheon we had with thirty former classmates on Monday. Sandra, we get news of...

I remember the terrible time you went through to get your abusive boyfriend out of your life. He hit your Son and now you say you're 'still working on being a couple'? That alone, tells me that you shouldn't be getting in the middle of a young girl's family problems.
Teenage boys often like to be the hero for girlfriends. I have a Son who was like that, but in his case, he had to be in control of everything. I'm not saying your Son is anything like that, but mine caused so much trouble while 'saving' his girlfriend from a bullying Father.
I think you have enough to deal with without taking on the unsolicited job of trying to counsel this young girl or her Mother. I would suggest you stick to looking up phone numbers for angencies created to handle abusive situations. If this girl was removed from her home because of safety issues, it's not likely she would be placed in the care of her 16 year old boyfriend's Mother. Seriously.
If your Son decided to help her run away and brought her to your house to hide, think of the trouble you would be in if you didn't report it.. You even said...'if it is authentic'. Children that age are very dramatic because their brains are at that stage of development. They actually feel things that strongly and don't hold back in expressing it!
I'm concerned that you still feel that working on healing yourself is somehow selfish. Your 'self' is far from healed so that's exactly what you should be focusing on. What would you do if you were in the middle of a horrendous migraine and an angry Parent was pounding on your door?
All kids that age are full of raging hormones so unless you plan to keep them apart with deadbolt locks, you would have to be on constant alert. You couldn't knock yourself out with meds to sleep your pain away. Your Son could be charged with Statuatory Rape even without proof, if her Parents wanted to cause trouble. If they were living under the same roof, how could you prove they had never had sex?
I'm just trying to be realistic to protect you! You don't have to fix things for all young girls because of your own experiences. You can lend an ear and encourage her to ask the appropriate people for help, but please consider how this could turn out if you allow yourself to get in the middle.
Love and healing hugs...
You are responsible for your son, not this girl, you have to draw a line for your sanity's sake.
Let the professionals handle it, thats what they are there for.
If drama knocks on your door, send it packing!
There's a saying i picked up, it goes like this... "CHOOSE DISCOMFORT OVER RESENTMENT"
You might feel bad saying no, but you are going to feel a whole lot worse if you say yes once the resentment kicks in!
One question, is if she is a citizen? No you do not want her living in your house with a 16 year old son. Toooo dangerous for him. Parents may start causing problems for your son and you.
Most states have child protective services that may be able to help. I have Ukranian tenants and they treat their women as 2nd class citizens. In that culture most wives will not step up to protect the female child. There is more help available if she is a citizen. Get the child protective services involved and they will find housing for her and hopefully get some counseling for the family.
Sad that today we have to protect our sons from some females or her family trying to frame them and put them in jail. My friend's son had that happen to him. The girl was writing fantasies in her diary. The father took the diary to the police and the boy was arrested. The girl was killed in a car wreck, drunk with a 40 year old drunk, it was proven that she had sex with this 40 year old. Sad that this happened because she could not explain her fantasy diary. The boy was put in jail for a few years and is listed as a sex offender for life. He can not get a job. This is a tragedy that we have to protect our sons from BS like this.
By all means be there to listen and be a support for her, but the safest is to get social services in charge. If she has to get out quick she needs to find a girlfriend whose parents may be able to offer temporary housing. We have a safe house that picks you up and takes you to an unknown location for safety. I don't know how dangerous her situation really is.
Sending prayers for guidance. Hugs-RJ
Proper authorities handle this.

please let us know.
Thanks for the great words of advise.
I agree with Heather.......and all the other Hen's. This is a complicated and volitile situation. I know you want to help.........but I would run in a differection........don't get involved.
Giving her the # was a good thing. And now - your work is done here.
RJ, that's so sad about your Son's friend. Some women can be ruthless when they are only out for self help. Obviously she never considered what devestating effects this would have for the young man..........for the rest of his life. Sad, so sad.
