Hi all!
June 1 through 4 I visited my son, DIL, and two grandkids in Albuquerque. It's just a short flight from the Phoenix airport, and quite easy.
Every single thing went well. I figured they would park in the cell phone lot at the airport and I would get my luggage and come out to the curb and they would pick me up. Nope! They parked, came into the airport, we greeted each other (it's been six years) and then we retrieved my luggage. My son wouldn't let me wheel my suitcase, and my granddaughter carried my tote bag.
I was treated with the utmost respect and love the entire visit. One night they bought dinner at a Benihana-type restaurant, lots of fun. Another night I hosted a dinner for the family as a celebration of life memorial for my husband who died in February. My grandson (now 19) got an extra helping of garlic mashed potatoes for Grandpa, who loved these potatoes! He seemed sad in the beginning, but then we began to joke about what Grandpa would eat and wouldn't eat. My DIL did a toast to him, saying he was one of the nicest men she had ever met.
I brought my grandson a special watch from my husband, and he was thrilled! I found some older rings from my husband's mother and I brought those for my granddaughter. They both seemed so touched by this.
We stayed up two nights on the patio talking until almost 1 a.m., kind of lost track of time. Then we shopped and just hung out. We have plans for them to visit me in Arizona over the July 4th holiday, since it's a three-day holiday thing. They will drive to my house, about 450 miles away.
At one point they even mentioned - we would love for you to move nearby. Wow! I am not planning on any move quickly, and I actually like where I live more than Albuquerque (even though it's been 116 degrees here, yuck). But what a kind gesture on their part.
When I left from the ABQ airport they parked, walked me in until we arrived at security. By the time I arrived home (all of an hour flight) my son had texted me "Have a good trip miss you already."
I am so happy because of all of this. It's such a shame that my husband could not have participated in this reunion, that's the bittersweet part. I have to believe he's happy for me.
So there's my story, I am happy but still cautious. We've all been through a lot, and I will never be quite the same, but this is a miracle in my mind (and I don't really believe in miracles!).
Hugs to you all -
