Okay - during the very painful time of my estrangement from my son - I packed on about 30 to 40 pounds.
After moving - I started thinking that I needed to get back into shape.
So - I spent a few months with calorie counting with some very mild success - too mild to count.
Then I tried Atkins - and was very strict about NO more carbs than allowed. I put on a few pounds - not the diet for me.
Since I had lost some weight with Nutrisystem about 7 years ago - I decided to go for it again. They hype it as something sort of magical having to do with the hypoglycemic index (whatever that is).
So - after eating my entire day's allotment of "food" and still being quite hungry - I decided to look at just how many calories I had ingested. It turns out that an entire day's calorie average intake is approx 770 calories. No wonder I'm hungry and no wonder people lose weight on this stuff.
They give you a daily allotment that is nearly a starvation diet - and what do you know - you lose weight. Will wonders never cease? As I"m writing this I'm looking at an ad for Nutrisystem on the right side of the page - DON'T be fooled you guys.....they will take your money and send you just enough for you to barely exist. This is not a deal. :)
I use to be anorexic for years. Going for "the cure", I learned all about nutrition and various diets.
I'm done with diets becuz they don't work and I don't care to go back to being anorexic/bulimic (not fun).
I think my problem of carrying the extra pounds is due to stress hormones as well as female hormone issues that can not be remedied with diets alone. If that were true then I would be thin (again). I don't over eat and I walk and still the pounds remain.
I'm not making my weight priority as long as I am alive. For too many years, it was my main focus and I felt miserable and suicidal. I look at these young thangs that are all skinny and cute and I think to myself...."enjoy it honey....cuz this is your future (waving my hand up and down in front of my body....lol).
However, I hope you find a diet that works for you (((((((((((Hugs))))))))))))))
"Diets" never work long term. If you go "on" a diet... at some point... you get "off" the diet. Then all returns to the beginning again.
I'm on a mission to loose 80 lbs this year. yes.. 80, Hey...It is what it is.
Ironically, I used to make my living teaching weight loss classes... so you immediately think... what can she know...? Well... you don't have to be an amputee to know how to make a prosthesis and teach someone how to use it...
I know it ... I just didn't DO it.
Linda.. it sounds like you have the discipline to stick to something. Just try this....
Eat better, exercise more. Period.
Sounds simple but it actually works. And.. it's something you can stick with for life.
Want cake...?? Have it. Just a smaller piece and maybe only once a week.
Buy yourself.. or maybe you already have one... a low glycemic book that lists the low, med, and high glycemic foods. There are TONS of foods on the low glycemic list. If you're hungry... EAT! Just eat anything on the low glycemic food list..... unlimited.
3 meals and 3 snacks a day. In between that... or with that... if it's low glycemic... eat it. No calorie counting... no carb counting... no measuring... just be reasonable with portion control with anything that is not low glycemic. Fill half your plate with veggies (3 - 4 cups each meal) 1/4 of it with protein or meat (4 - 6 oz) .... 1/4 with low glycemic carbs... ie: sweet potato.... Don't measure any of these things.. just estimate... you'll be fine. Eat a serving of fruit in the morning and afternoon... to keep those sugar levels from bottoming out. Still hungry? I keep a gallon size bag of raw veggies available all day long to munch on. By the end of the day... it's gone.
One other note... EAT!! Eat till you are full. Just eat the right stuff. Eating too little or too infrequently can keep you from losing weight. The number 1 complaint I had with every one of my classes was "I can't eat that much food" !!
That's all. Simple. It's kinda like Atkins without all the fat intake... and with fruit.
Don't get discouraged at first. You will find that the inches come off before the weight. Don't go by the scale... go by how your clothes fit. I HIGHLY recommend you don't get on the scale for the first MONTH.
Slow progress defeats us every time. Don't peek! Just do it!!
This is a great diabetic plan as well. Keeping those blood sugar levels in check.
I'm down 5 lbs since Jan 4. Only 75 to go! I gave myself till Dec 31 to get there... Didn't put it on that fast... don't expect it to come off that fast.!
I started all of my classes with this statement. All of us who are overweight got there on purpose. Yes.. on purpose! Tell me, did you EVER eat anything by accident??? LOL !!
What ever method you choose.... Here's to a healthier 2013!!
Whoa - you guys thank you so much for your replies and the hugs.
BarbaraJean - I am going to buy the book on the low glycemic foods - wow - if I can eat everything I want (within reason)- as long as it is low glycemic - that sounds very doable.
I'm off to Amazon to buy my new book. Very cool - I am feeling enthused again - thank you so much!!
Hey... we'll keep each other on track! Feel free to ask any questions you may have. I taught this for 6 years out of a doctor's office. He referred his patients to me. The doctor believed in this because it's just common sense and it's not a diet... it's just learning to eat healthy.
Daily.... Going out to eat is not the best... but you have to change your habits if you want to change your weight (and health). Reward yourself once a week with a meal out. If you must eat out during the week... just do it smartly. Make healthy choices .... that's all.
Oh yeah... Don't forget to get off the couch! You don't have to go to a gym... (Yuch!) Walk... climb the stairs... get an exercise video.... some cable providers have a free exercise section where you rent movies like "On Demand"... Just move more than you do now.... the rest will come. By spring you'll be ready to take it outside !
I have put on so much weight in the last few month. I lost 25 lbs last year and then I broke my foot and was unable to do my regular excercise and I'm still going to rehab for my foot, but its almost better and getting stronger. During this time food has been my best friend. Cake once a week, sigh....how about once a day :O
Aww - Joy - I'm sorry to hear this. We can get this food issue under control. All we need to do is to inspire and support each other I'm thinking.
I broke my knee cap 2 years ago and that laid me up too - it stopped my walking cold. But it's time I stop using that excuse - my knee cap has been just fine for 1 1/2 years now - I can probably walk again.
I'm going to start tomorrow - walking my pups down to the park 2 times a day. They need it too - pudgy little guys that they have become.....
Thank you Linda. Its is all about moving and I love to run, but I'm not allowed to do that just yet. I'm supposed to go to the gym this week, but I'm so embarrassed because of all the weight I've gained. I didn't realize I had gained so much until last night when I couldn't fit into any of my pants....oh no. I too have such a hard time losing weight, but I know I have to as my blood pressure is crazy high. I'm goin to try to go gluten free and low glycemic, plus extra veggies and more water. We'll see...
I need somebody to hook a leash to my collar and take me for a walk -- then maybe I'd get my butt up and walk! LOL
I get in this downward spiral -- pain, not wanting to move, then more pain from not moving, then not being able to move from pain and so on .... Moving is important -- it is so hard to get going and then when I really feel bad-- I go to bed and pull the covers over my head! Bad move!
Just went swimming -- therapy pool-- have to keep it up, I feel so much better when I do!
Difficult ... I've often thought the same thing! If someone would only put 1 cup of food out for me ... twice a day and I'd have no access to any more..... then hook me up and drag my butt out for a long walk... I wouldn't be in this predicament !
Anyone who is doing anything... is lapping those still on the couch! Keep up the swimming.. it's a good thing! Therapy pools are great!
I met with a friend recently who has spent most of her life dieting and then piling back the weight she lost. We hadn’t met for some time so I was amazed to see her looking great and a lot, lot slimmer, but what struck me most was how positive and happy she was.
She told me she had been following the Fast Diet “The Fast Diet: The Secret of Intermittent Fasting - Lose Weight, Stay Healthy, Live Longer by Michael Mosley and Mimi Spencer” She eats normally for five days and then has two fasting days, she chose Tuesday and Fridays, where she consumes only 500 calories for each of those days which consists of breakfast late morning and then a light dinner in the evening interspersed with lots of low calorie drinks. Whilst I don’t have as much weight as she had to lose I know I would feel so much better being more than a few lbs lighter so I’ve started it and so far so good. My first ‘fast’ day was not as bad as I anticipated and knowing that the next day I would be free to eat as I pleased, helped. The ‘feel good factor’ that is the result of fasting and apparently kicks in after a few weeks will spur me on.
Here is a review from the book which is pretty much what my friend said about it.
“Book arrived this morning and I spent the next few hours reading it cover to cover. I've been following this way of eating since August and lost 20 lb so far and 6 inches off my waist. It has left me feeling both physically and and mentally healthier and so far, fingers crossed, my annual winter SAD has not materialised. There's so much information on the internet about this and similar diets (I know, I've looked!) so it's great to have it all distilled in one book and I look forward to Dr Mosley's soon-to-be-launched website dedicated to 5:2. If I had the money I would buy several copies and distribute them amongst my sceptical friends. The first half deals with the science behind fasting, the second the practicalities. There is also a chapter dedicated to the findings of people like me who have been following this 'diet' . All in all a very satisfying book. I highly recommend it, especially if, like me, you've tried diet after diet and very quickly slipped back into bad habits because you've found them unsustainable. 5 days of ordinary eating, 2 days of restricted calories. It's as simple as that.”
I’ll keep you updated as to my progress and would also be interested in knowing how others are dealing with their weight loss. Good luck to us all shedding that unwanted weight…….
Hold it - PippaAnne - your friend ate about the same amount of calories on her fasting days as I was allowed on a full normal day on Nutrisystem :) I just knew something was wrong with their food plan.
That just cracks me up - like who wouldn't lose weight on 700 calories a day - no big surprise there....
And I paid them for this food plan? I could just not go shopping for food and accomplish the same thing - lolol - I don't know why this strikes me so funny tonight.
But Barbara has me on the straight and narrow - and thanks again Barb. It's going to take awhile to sink into - but I'm sure I can do this one.....
I gained 25 lbs with this estrangement and the shock of estrangement also threw me into the big m. I too need this weight off but I guess I am using Adkins because I feel healthy on it. im one of those ppl that need protein . It works for me since any sugar always makes me crave more. I don't see how this is harmful if your just eating basic lean meat, poultry, fish, vegetables oh and cheese. I lost 4 lbs last week and didn't move much because I really over did housework and yard work and couldn't move or stand this last week.
I'm done with diets becuz they don't work and I don't care to go back to being anorexic/bulimic (not fun).

LindaJean, we also tried Atkins, Nutrisystem & weight watchers, weight watchers worked for me, my downfall is I love to go out to eat.
BarbaraJean - have to look into the "low glycemic book"
