The contract was awarded in 1992 and scheduled to run until 2012, and is worth $1.9 Billion dollars over that period.
Though LSO is the prime contractor, there are many other subcontractor personnel from other contractors that LSO subcontracts to for individual operations, such as launch preparation, payload preparation, vehicle transport, Astronaut support, etc.
It has always been private contractors who are responsible for NASA Center operations; for example, the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, NASA's Lead Center for mission direction of unmanned and robotic space probes, is managed and staffed by personnel from the California Institute of Technology (CalTech).
Many people mistakenly believe that JPL is a part of CalTech, which of course it isn't.
