Today, July 4th is the day of red white and blue, but in early iterations, the holiday was celebrated with GREEN.
A tradition which continued into the 1800s.
" That was started by George Washington and his troops," Heintze explained.
" Soldiers wore GREENS in their caps, and buildings were decorated.
But as red-white-and-blue paper [became widely available], and the flag became more important, that fell out of favor."
Back then, they also fired off cannons from previous wars to mark the celebration.
But as the cannons fell into disrepair, we eventually switched over to other things that go boom in the sky.
