Hello all:
Been busy looking for jobs lately with a few bites but mostly crickets. Got a really rude email from an HR lady Thursday. She said they received my resume but were pursuing "other candidates". What no janitor job for lil ol me?
Anyhoo, been looking at filing for disability. Been off work for 3 mos. i am disabled but I know qualifying is a different story. Even my wife told me this week I should go on. That is surely a trick tho.
So a few questions if Anyone can help.
Do you have to wait 6 months to file?
Rumour has it everyone is denied the first time
Do I need a lawyer? Will that help?
How long does it take for the approval process?
I will check the ssi website also but any tips would be greatly appreciated.

i was approved the first time, but i had all of my records of scans, surgeries, etc. and if you have all your records.
those are my only tips, but it shouldn't be so bad.

Lots of work, however you get your benefit from the day of filing,
That is a big deal, can add up quickly
It can be done by you and your family
But get filed asap
That will add up

The sooner you file the better, it shows you're unable to work.
You have to have all the documents, labs....info to prove your case and that is what it is.
I was denied the first time in spite of their own doctor saying I couldn't work more than 4 hours a week...figure that one out. It really varies by state and judges.
If you feel comfortable pleading your own case to a judge go for it otherwise get that lawyer.
You have to have a doctor willing to say you aren't capable of working...ouch. So take all your records and a well written list to your doctor and more or lest plead your case to him/her also.

I too was blessed to have gotten it on the first try. By the time I applied I had already had three back surgeries in 9mn & was getting ready to go in for my fourth. I brought all my records to the local SS Office. I lucked out and got a really nice guy, he took a look at my paperwork and said "this is off the record, but yours should get approved with no problems." & it did and there isn't a day that goes by that I dot say a prayer of thanks. The hardest part was after your approved you'll start getting your checks, but need to wait a year before you get your medicare Insurance. Oh, and as the others have said make sure you have every single record, including labs, absolutely everything!
So much has changed, & you have to look at all the service men & women that came back from the war. I believe they said their were over a million that applied, lord knows Im probably wrong on the number as that figure was from a couple years ago. I wish you all the best should you go for it.
Keep in mind that what you might consider a disability and what the government says is one may be two different things. If they feel like you could still work despite whatever you are disabled with, you're going to have a harder time with it. You may be asked to show some proof that whatever you are trained to do you no longer can do due to your disability.
Like others have said, document everything. Your doctors also need to back the fact that your disability limits your ability to hold substantial, gainful employment (namely that you can't do 40-hrs a week in the field of work you've previously held work in) - without that, you're going nowhere fast.
It took me about 2 years to get approved, that includes appealing and having to have a hearing before a judge about it. But I have fibromyalgia so it's a harder case to prove and it's basically an automatic rejection on the first try.
