May 5th marks the anniversary of the first U.S. manned space flight.
On May 5, 1961, astronaut Alan B. Shepard Jr. became America’s
first space traveler as he made a 15-minute suborbital flight aboard
Freedom 7, a Mercury capsule launched from Cape Canaveral, Florida.
Shepard piloted the Freedom 7 mission and became the
second person, and the first American, to travel into space.
The suborbital flight, which lasted 15 minutes and reached a
height of 116 miles into the atmosphere, was a major triumph
for NASA.
