The first ever Indy 500 was held on a Memorial Day 1911, and it's been a part of Memorial Day weekend ever since.
That first match was won by Ray Harroun, who beat out 39 other cars to win $14,250 (the largest car race prize ever) by going a whopping 74.59 mph.
That speed was only slightly slower than 2015's winner who clocked in at an average rate of 161.341 mph.
And while you might think that the Indy 500 is one of the most unsafe events in the world, it should be noted that Harroun accomplished another first that day.
His car was the first to have a rear-view mirror
