I guess maybe this is appropriate for another place, but I felt what the heck...
My youngest son has been having difficulty in school over the last few years but last year it only got worse. He is a good kid, don't get me wrong, and is often messy and unruly as any other kid. But the teachers say he has difficulty staying on task and he will get distracted easily. Last years' teacher said it's like he will have 5 things to do and it takes him so long to do two assignments that he can't possibly get everything done. and to top it off, he has lied about stuff like telling me he handed things in only to find the teacher never received it. But he'll tell the teacher that the paperwork is at home, but it isn't.
At the teacher's suggestion, I had him tested for ADD and what I was told is that he doesn't have ADD really in the classical sense and he said you could try medication but it may or may not work. I have decided not to try to bounce him around medication because who knows what he will be like after several successive different meds. BTW I have OCD and the therapist we went too suggested that ADD and OCD are similar cousins and they both may afffect the same area of the brain. However, he does not have OCD apparently and neither full blown ADD.
anyway, I talked to a gal at work and she said she has had similar problems with her son and she went through many different ways of keeping him organized. finally she set upon a file folder he can put his stuff in. he seems to like it. I have decided to spin off of that and create a formal procedure of how my son will file his stuff and I'll make sure he follows the rules. Hopefully it will work but I guess that's all I have left.
anybody else had a similar tale or can offer any advice?

Apparently, they figured out his problem and he got some tutoring.
At home, I would give her one job at a time....if she was cleaning her room, I would say, Megan start by picking up all your clothes....then we would go on to picking up the trash.....then to making the bed.
I think they get overwhelmed, and tend to shut down. When they can focus on one thing at a time, they have a more of a chance for success.
Try to focus when your desk is a huge mess! I can't and I'll spend all my time trying to clean it up and end up not getting any work done.
