ok, so this is one day late but I'd be interested in other people's memories of that event and basically what they felt at that time.
For me, I was working 8 hour night shift at a factory and our youngest son was about 2 years old. so after the wife had left for work in the morning, I got up to watch our son. I turned on the tv and saw that a plane had crashed into one of the twin towers. I thought to myself "stupid pilot" but a short time later I realized that a second plane had hit another tower and I immediately chalked that up to more than just mistakes. So I watched the rest of the day as they explained what happened and it was clear that terrorism was the problem. But that night I worked on a machine what spit out square cut bundles of labels and we jokingly suggested if the machine did not work right somebody should fly a plane into it (not that 9/11 is a joke, but sometimes you apply humor to serious things at that moment).
About a week later, at work we dedicated a small stone or something at work in the grassy area to this tragedy. I remember some of the gals sobbing at bit when we did our mini ceremony.
I also remember that football games were cancelled that weekend and that year they made the games up at year end.
But before the planes hit, the big story on Fox news was a dude named Gary Condit and some scandal he was in. I was so sick of hearing about it, but then the 9'/11 tragedy changed all that.
A year later at the one year anniversary, people were outside holding candles (I forgot what the symbolism was on that)

The next day at school one of my sons' schoolmate was still waiting to hear from his grandfather. He was in a meeting on one of the top floors of the towers and one of the Canadians killed.
I remember the dead silence as air traffic was suspended and the shock when I heard an airplane again.
