sorry, I see that this author is trying to draw parallels between the rise of Hitler in hard economic times. I somehow doubt we'll see a ethnic-cleansing dictator rise in the west any time soon but never say never.

Agreed about Hitler but there are other similar instances such as runaway spending, entitlements, and printing of money to cover this etc.

you don't have the vast devaluation of the dollar such as other countries (besides Germany) have experienced - Mexico, Argentina are among them. The most crazy example was Zimbabwe...I guess the author's theme/implication is "this economic situation created a situation where a dictator could take over.

the dollar has lost some value. I think Asia's rise is a different topic. China is No. 2 in the world and rising.

The dollar hasn't gotten to the point where it's only worth a cent or less compared to other currencies.

America will only change when the people change their way of thinking. When was America a prosperous country? When people worked, saved their money and then bought what they needed/wanted. If the US and Canada continue to live on credit we will be doomed to fail. Where I live houses average $350,000 and that's for older houses, we now have lots that are way above the $500,000. Huge mortgages, two vehicles that are bought on credit, clothing bought on credit cards, vacations the same way, boats and rv's. You can now go and get furniture on credit. Our neighbours moved here from another country- she went on a one day shopping spree and filled the house with brand new furniture bragging that her H makes $60,000/year, in one day she charged $20,000- just on furniture.
Our Governments are doing the same thing- living on credit and WHO is that is lending that money? and what happens when you can't pay it back? Anyone think China will send a couple big guys to break your legs? We'd be lucky to get off so easily.

there was a time when my ex and I were over 30,000 dollars in debt plus our mortgage. we got loans to side our house, put windows in, etc. and before long we needed different cars and needed loans for that also. it got too much. so I refinanced our mortgage, paid down the debts and I vowed I would never do that again. now we are apart but I pay a mortgage one credit card and that's all. I have no car loans.

if America thought more along those lines it'd be concerned about its debt and pay it back and scrimp and save to do so.. That means no $100 toilet seats and government programs that waste money. alas, so few think that way.
