through a friend I have volunteered at a homeless shelter for women to teach a home budgeting class. A lot of these women have never handled a home budget before as they had husbands or whatever that handled it and now they are on their own (for various reasons) and don't know how. since I'm pretty darn good managing a home budget and being a $ saver, I have volunteered to spend maybe an hour a week doing the class. right now I'm told they have 3 women there, so it's not a big shelter.
this 4 day weekend for me I plan to finalize my plans on how I want to go about it but I would appreciate any input. put yourself in the situation of someone who has never ran a home budget before. What would you like to see taught?
I guess my first class would be to ask the gals what they would like to see. But I plan on giving them some homework. I"ll give them a copy of the local paper with the ads for apartments and ask them to pick out a place they might like to live someday and give them some dollar amounts for food and taxi and stuff and have them calculate an amount they have left over for spending money after receiving a specific pay per month. What I want is for them to learn to adapt to specific scenarios they might encounter. After a simple run through we'll deal with how to handle credit card responsibility, saving money for a car someday, and so forth.
any additional ideas would be helpful

I find that most people put enough money back for maintanence. Tires are as much a part of the expense of a car as gas is. It's important to have good ones (especially if you live in a snow state), but 99.9% of people really don't care what a tire looks like. It's really not going to add to your happiness....so buy ugly.
The same with stuff like soap. If your kid uses half of a cheap bar of soap taking a bath one night....no real big deal. Buy the expensive stuff and then the kid has just had an expensive bath.
That said, dollar stores are often a rip off. Smaller packages, of an inferior product. Grocery stores often have good generics though. Most or Least expensive of anything is usually a bad deal. The cheapest vacuum is going to fall apart....the most expensive is stuff you'll seldom use and will often just make it heavier (and the bags more expensive).
Just my two cents (that I saved for......the rich LEND.....borrowing keeps people poor).
I had some rare free time and went to the mall yesterday. The Stuff there was amazing. Kitchen stuff to do everything but clean itself up and put itself away. I wanted none of it.
(I did get my daughter some clothes for next year in school. Pants for $7 marked down from some ridiculous price, I got 2 pairs. So now she's up to 6 for next year. About enough. She'll get to go out and buy one or two outfits in Aug, then she'll get stuff for Christmas. Hand-me-downs from her brother will fill in the rest. Big ticket price was for a $16 swimsuit that's appropriate for a 10 year old. She didn't really need one, but it's hard to find ones that she'll like and I think aren't cut for a Victoria's Secret model.
