We have alot of friends into NFL football but as for hubby and I we have never followed it steadily only because my hubby stays outside so much I cannot sit him down long enough to watch an entire game, lol!! He loves to work on the boat, lawnmower, or house. He keeps himself busy...YES..even in football season believe it or not!! I am sure there will be interest here though....if I am not mistaken I believe our member Blaine takes interest in this too. I need to check in to see how he is doing as I have not seen him around lately.

Explain what you mean by pool. Is it collections of whose team will win....I guess explain how the whole pool system works as I am not very familiar with it. It sounds very exciting, competetive, and fun!! When hubby and I first married we would go to a bar on game day and meet up with friends to watch the game speculating on whose team would win! I remember those days....very fun!!!!!!

Pools are quite simple.
Pools are generally the same but can vary slightly. To join for a season is roughly $200.00. The season is 17 weeks long and there is 32 teams which makes 16 games a week. Just to clarify , this changes a bit for about the first half of the season because each team gets a buy week or a week off. So sometimes there is just 13 or 14 games.
Some pubs are different but usually it is a $30.00 sign up fee plus $170.00 plus $25.00 for loser pool (optional).
The $170 works out to $10 a week x17 weeks.
You get a sheet with all the games for that week and you pick who is going to win each game. The one with the most wins that week wins roughly $2500.00 and this is if there is aprox. 300 members. You add what you think the total points will be for the Mon. night game. If the game score is a final , let's say 24 to 21 then that is 45 points. This is in case of a tie and the one closet to the actual score wins and there is generally only one game on Mon. Each week you add your amount of wins and the one with the most wins at the end of the season wins the grand prize. It's usually the top ten at the end that win and during the season on the weekly win it is usually first and second. The grand prize at the end is roughly 7000.00.
The loser pool is easy , all you have to do is pick a team that you think will lose. So for week one you pick a team you think will lose and if that team loses then you are still in , if the team you picked to lose wins the game , then your out. You can only pick a different team each week ( you can only pick a team once).
The pubs have all kinds of promotions also , gifts , prizes etc. also which is usually Mon. night. It sucks for the east because of the time difference. A Mon. game here in the west starts at 6 pm where the east would be 9 pm.
So Sun. is a great day for football because it's all day Sun., and here it is usually raining during football season.

I know there is not much interest in nfl football but this is just a tidbit that I would like to share and the pre season started last night. Seattle is only about 3 hours from Vancouver and climate etc. is almost identical. Last season , Seattle won the super bowl and there is aprox. 15,000 season ticket holders from British Columbia. Plus there are pubs that have bus trips to the games and people who buy tickets and go down on their own. So during the summer , the Seattle team brought the trophy to Vancouver to show their appreciation. I along with everybody else in B.C. thought that was really good. My problem is that I'm a Denver Bronco's fan and Seattle SMOKED Denver in the last Super Bowl.

Tell me something...since my hubby has never really been into football I never got to throw one of those game parties and from what I can tell you and your wife have had lots of experience. So....if you are going to invite people over to watch the game what goes on? Does everyone just gather round the flat screen and watch or what really goes on at these parties?

Denver Broncos are cool.. I have always wanted to go to a football game to watch live but I have never been able to go. I get touchdowns but I have never understood about what happens in between and the language of football. It gets confusing to me. If you don't mind........if you get a minute please explain some of that to me. I am going to try to watch a game on Sunday afternoon and improve my knowledge of the sport. Bye for now.

It does seem very confusing but once you get into it a bit , it will come together. You don't need to know every player , every rule etc.
First the parties or get togethers.
You have some friends over and some need to have an interest in football. You can tailor this any way you like such as having snacks , wings etc. or you can wind the day up with dinner. You can play cards or other games also while the games are on. You don't have to sit and be glued to the tv. If you are betting on the games then the interest is bigger. If it's in house betting then it can be for bragging rights or whatever.
There are lots of women interested in football and here are some ideas to start your interest. There are 32 teams and you can see all these teams and colours on nfl.com.
Some of my friends wives and this is going back awhile did not know one thing about football but wanted in so they picked a team to root for. They also got into the pools and used some of these same tactics that I'm going to mention. Some picked a team because they liked their colours or the city there from or they liked dolphins so they picked Miami or they thought the quarter back for a certain team had a nice bum etc. etc..
We will take a nice easy start with this and move if you like it.
The game has four 15 min. quarters with a break after the second quarter.
One team will kick the ball to the other to start the game. So the team with the ball will try and throw or run the ball down the field and across the line for a touchdown. The team with the ball gets 4 chances to move the ball 10 yards down field in order to get a first down. So if they throw the ball and only gain 4 yards then it becomes second and 6. They try again and let's say they don't get any because the player didn't catch the ball for example so now it becomes 3rd and 6. So they try again and if they get the 6 yards to make it 10 , then it goes back to 1st down and do it again. Now if they haven't made their 10 yards after 3 downs and it is 4 down they have to decide whether to try again or punt the ball away. If for example the team did try to get a 1st down on the 4th try and didn't get the yards they needed then the other teams gets the ball where the team failed on the 4 the down.
