There should be special schools for Children with hyperacusisand other conditions in which they get pain from sound.Childrenwith hyperacusis can not reach their full academic potential in regular schools or alternative schools because they are in pain it makes it hard to concentrate. Students with hyperacusis may have a lot of absences because they are in too much pain to come to school which will drop their grades. They will get placed in one school after another with different accommodations and long periods of absence some may even end up on home & hospital. A lot of kids with hyperacusis are home schooled by the families because they can’t tolerate school and the school system and their parents don’t know what to do. Those who do go to school undergo a great deal of pain everyday just learn. Every child deserves to be able to get the highest quality education without it being painful. So sense hyperacusis children can not receive that at mainstream or alternative schools because of the noise they need a special just for them where it is specially designed to super quiet. 

   Studies have shown that regular classroom noise has a negative affect on academic performance. Loud sounds such as airplanes and kids making a lot of noise makes it difficult for the children to hear what the teacher is saying. Noise also makes it hard to concentrate and retain information even for normal kids. In a study done on first and second graders at two different schools one loud one quieter the kids in the quiet school did much better then the kids at the noisy school. If this is true for children without hyperacusis then it must be even worst for children with hyperacusis who experience everything magnified and feel the pain in their ears and head from it. It is not just louder noises that affect students performance however, Studies done on elementary school students showed that noises we think of as quiet the air or heat sounds from the other classrooms or the hall way a fish filter negatively affect children’s test scores. If the test scores of children without hyperacusis are affectedthen the scores of the students with hyperacusis are affected even more making it look like they know less then they actually do.

  Hyperacusis is a real disorder. The hair cells in the inner ear are super sensitive in hyperacusis patients and pick up more sound which sends a hyperactive signal to the 8th auditory nerve which sends it to the auditory cortex which interprets it as too loud sending it to the somatosensory cortex which releases the pain signal. Studies have shown that chronic pain impaires learning capability and memory, people with hyperacusis are in chronic pain from sounds. When you are in pain it is hard to concentrate and you can not perfume your best.

  IDEA individuals with disabilities education act states that if a student has a condition that impacts them participating in school activities or learning in the same environment or way as other students that the school system must find a way for them to learn to their full potential. Students with hyperacusis are not learning to their full potential in regular schools of even alternative schools.The school systems are not meeting the legal requirements for these students education. The average noise level of a school is 90db. Although everyone with hyperacusishas different LDL’s they are all below 70db. Research has shown that 90 db is loud enough to get hearing loss if exposed to it for long enough. 

  Some people feel that there should not be schools for kids with hyperacusis. because there are some effective treatments such as low level laser therapy, desensitization, pulsed electromagnetic field therapy, tinnitus retraining therapy, transcranial magnetic stimulation, medication and physical therapy for the nerves, bones, muscles around the ear and head. Others argue that children with hyperacusis need to be in a environment with normal noise so that they can adjust. Many people think that there are not enough students to justify spending that kind of money to build a soundproof school for children with hyperacusis. 

  However according to the no child left behind law no matter how small the population of students who are unable to learn in regular or alternative schools they are still a part of the school system and have the right to an education that will allow them to reach their full potential. Since there are so few students with hyperacusis there would only need to be a few hyperacusisschools per state. The schools would be soundproof and have classes of between 1-4 people. The severity of the hyperacusiswould depend on weather the student was in a class by themselves or with 1 2 or 3 other kids. The schoool would have neurologist who specialize in pediatric chronic pain neurotologists, physical therapist, low laser practionors, pulsed electromagnetic field practionors and therapists and nurses. There would also be dorms in case the students had to come from far away. The dorms would be divided according to gender age and severity of hyperacusis. All of the children do not eat together depending on there severity some eat by themselves others in pairs others in small groups. Our school will have a soundproof clear dome wear the children can play outside. There will be quiet clubs and activities that the students can participate in. We will accommodate them based on their personal needs.

   Image if every sound you heard would reverberate and pound in your head or feel like electric shocks to the ear  or even  cause dizziness and seizures. Going to school for kids with hyperacusis would like if you went to a concert for 6 ½ hours 5 days a week with a migraine. Now image there is a teacher a theconcert and you are expected to learn and retain information. Imagine wearing hearing aids on max volume everyday this is what is like to have hyperacusis. A fifteen year old boy with hyperacusis was miserable at school because he was in so much pain. He went to the nurse many times a day but she just sent him back to class. He could not participate in activities like gym or other things at school. His grades were failing and he did not engage with the other children. Eventually his mother had to take him out of the school system. This often happens to hyperacusis kids their parents should not have to take their child out of the school system because it is not meeting their child's needs. Hyperacusis depending on severity would fall under special education and we are not meeting the legal standards for these children. Every child deserves a pain free education.
