Syringomyelia Support Group
Syringomyelia is a disorder in which a cyst or tubular cavity forms within the spinal cord. This cyst, called a syrinx, expands and elongates over time, destroying the center of the spinal cord resulting in pain, weakness, and stiffness in the back, shoulders, arms, or legs.
In the past I have had many MRI`s ,so many I can`t count them . I lost count at 20 . Well yesterday the pain doc had me go for more on my cervical and thorasic spine ,he already had one done on my lumbar spine but found out that the syrnx there is up inyo the T-spine so he wanted to see if it grew more that way .This time in the tube though I had to force myself to lay still for too long and the longer I lay there the worse the pain got .By the time the MRI was done I was in tears and they had to lift me off of the table . It took me a good 15 minutes to just be able to stand and another 10 minutes for me to take a step .I know somethig is wrong because this has never happened and my symptoms leading up to the MRI had gottes worse .
Has this ever happened to any of you , if it did what if anything did your NS or Pain Doc do ?????

That hasn't ever happened to me during an MRI. But it has happened to me at other times. Any kind of movement would provoke more pain. I think that the bulging discs that I have were a major factor. For me, it seems to take a little while to go away. Like I'm paralyzed even though I'm not paralyzed. Not that I can't move, but because I can't move without major pain. Even breathing can be hard. If that makes any sense. It gets so bad that I can't even begin to think about moving my right arm, let alone actually moving it.
I haven't brought this up with any of my doctors. I guess probably because they might not believe me, or at least that's how I feel. Hang in there! Did you get your results? If so, is it worse? What did they have to say about your incident at the MRI?

I got my results and they did get worse . The pain doc wants me to go and see another NS in Lubbock , Tx . As he said just in case something happens then I will be established with a NS . He also had me come in Friday and did an epidoural injectin in one of my lumbar joints for the pain . So far it has helped a little along with Ice packs and rest . But still there is the numbness in my right hand and all the sharp pains in my feet and hands . I got one so bad yesterday morning in my right quad that I almost fell ,so sharp and intense it almost dropped me .
I havent had another MRI since, but I now take a muscle relaxer and I wonder had I been on it then if it wouldve helped.
For some reason they had me in the tube for over an hour ,can`t say why but they didn`t even do it with contrast and it took that long . And one of the techs said they even left the control room for a while . The machine was running the whole time . Never had one last that long before .And I used to take muscle relaxers but it got to where they were not diong anything to stop the spasms so the doc took me off of them and didn`t give me anything to replace them . Thia pain doc said that I do have a lot of arthritis in my back ,especally in the lumbar reagion . Don`t know if that has anything to do with the spasms but he said it dosen`t help with the pain ,,,No kidding........
