Syringomyelia Support Group
Syringomyelia is a disorder in which a cyst or tubular cavity forms within the spinal cord. This cyst, called a syrinx, expands and elongates over time, destroying the center of the spinal cord resulting in pain, weakness, and stiffness in the back, shoulders, arms, or legs.
I am new to this support group. I have responded to posts, and now I'm attempting to make a post of my own. I have Chiari I and Syringomyelia. I'm not familiar yet with all the abbreviations. I have severe chronic pain and various nerve problems. I work full time. With God's help, I push myself through the day. Keeping busy helps keep my mind off my problems. I know we're not medical doctors here, but I'm curious about what natural remedies have worked for you. These are things that have seemed to work for me, and I wouldn't advise you to do any of this without asking your medical doctor if it's okay first.
1) Complete body stretches: flexibility, strength, and balance
2) 1-2 pound weights: strength
3) Walking: Keep blood pumping and keep off extra pounds which can cause extra pain
4) Natural sugars: Honey, molasses, fruit, and dark chocolate
(It seems as if ham and processed sugar increases my pain level.
5) Fish Oil and Flax Seed Oil Supplements (Omega 3):Took at night. Noticed an immediate improvement in vision and focusing (Not as hazy and able to notice details for a longer period without suffering strain/pain)
6) Turmeric: Pain (Not as certain about how much it helped. Not as profound as the fish oil and omega 3)
7) Black Tea (Chai Spiced): Energy and calming effect
8) DHEA Supplement: Energy
9) Green Tea: Metabolism
Remember to ask your doctor. I have a hypothyroid just like everybody else on here pretty much. Just found out I have to wait 4 hours after taking it to take certain things like supplements, vitamins, etc., Does anyone take their thyroid pill at night instead of in the morning? I know you have to wait so many hours in either direction of taking it. I think it's 2 hours after you eat but can be taken 1 hour before you eat. I drink my coffee with honey, heavy cream, and cocoa right after I take my thyroid pill. Hopefully, that doesn't affect it.
Let me know what works for you. Sometimes people can take off an additional edge of pain by making good choices along with their meds.

I do drink coffee first thing in the morning. I don't wait an hour when I probably should. I do wish you well. This specialist should be able to spot the cerebral tonsils hanging down into the spinal column. Hope you have a good specialist. Think mine went too long unchecked. But, I do know that when I had the surgery, I had increased horrific pain in my neck. Not sure what happened during my surgery, but I felt as if I had been obliterated off the face of the planet. Took 10 days just to be able to turn my head one notch. So, be careful. Prayerfully.........
