Syringomyelia Support Group
Syringomyelia is a disorder in which a cyst or tubular cavity forms within the spinal cord. This cyst, called a syrinx, expands and elongates over time, destroying the center of the spinal cord resulting in pain, weakness, and stiffness in the back, shoulders, arms, or legs.
God has been gracious to give me a new job, but it will be the most challenging job that I will ever face. I've been to training, but there's a lot of information to digest. I'm fortunate that my job is not physically draining other than being on my feet all day. It's also mentally taxing and requires constant focus, organizational skills, and decision making skills. I want to bring glory to God's name.
Does anyone recommend a good shoe that's dressy enough to wear with slacks or capris? I have a pair of men's Nike Lunar Glide that are the most comfortable shoes that I've ever worn, but I need something dressier. (I have a wide foot and a bunyan.)
According to what I read about the aftermath of decompression surgery, there can be ups and downs for years afterward. Here recently, I've had increased burning in my mid-back and feet. I was able to handle the pain by God's grace with a reduced amount of meds but have not been able to bear the pain on the reduced amount. I had shoulder surgery 5 years ago, and my shoulder hurts worse now than it did before the surgery. I'm hoping that this is a periodic flare-up due to syrinx in my mid-back shrinking.
I've also going to have to be able to be able to go to work without taking my afternoon nap. Someone had told me that a person can sleep when they're dead, A nap helps take the edge off and leaves me feeling better than I did all morning before the nap. I can also focus better and stay up later.
I'm glad I'm going back to work. It's been really tough for the past 3 years since my surgery with the increased pain. My symptoms have progressively gotten worse since I was 16. However, I want to be able to help others and pray that God will bless my efforts. I pray that all of you have a blessed day and have some pain relief and that God's hand of peace will comfort your hearts and ease your symptoms.

I have very numb feet and they help me still keep my dignity.
I believe you can buy them at Walmart and Famous Footwear. They are reasonably priced.
I am happy you have a job. I have one also and it makes my life a little more complete.

My L5 vertebrate has caused nerve damage, but I also have syrinx in my lower back. I'm not sure which is causing the burning pain in my feet which my neurologist had told me was nerve pain. My mid back, arms, and hands have also been burning badly waking me up at night. It feels as if I'm on fire but my hands and feet are cold.
I appreciate your prayers. I've had increased pain lately. I moved to another state where it is more humid and has more allergans. A dr. had told me that in your bursa, joints, etc. when it's low pressure (rain) outside, there's high pressure in the fluid around the joints which causes increased pain.Maybe, I can adjust to the increased pain or God will be gracious to send some relief. I just finished another series of scans. I will find out the next course of action on the 12th.
I am frustrated b/c I spent all that money with no diagnosis. My sister has RA. My right thumb and joints below it including my wrist are swelling and are painful. It could just be arthritis from being older. I know how debilitating it can be b/c I had a professor in college who was in a wheelchair as a result of RA and my sister of course. Now, I'm having to adjust to the new type of pain along with my other conditions. That's alright. I just need to know what I'm up against.
I do feel there is a fine line for me between the R.A. and the syrinx. I can't always tell which part is hurting.
I do still work. Largely because I have the best boss ever. I have worked for her for thirteen years. She has carried me for along time. It is something I will never forget.
I do believe I will be o.k. from this. I think God has given this to me for a reason. I will learn that reason when he is ready.
