Syringomyelia is a disorder in which a cyst or tubular cavity forms within the spinal cord. This cyst, called a syrinx, expands and elongates over time, destroying the center of the spinal cord resulting in pain, weakness, and stiffness in the back, shoulders, arms, or legs.
Has anyone had problems with gaining wieght .Since I was diagnosed I have had problems with this .I used to stay in shape by walking and exercising and lifting weights . But since I have had surgery to place a shunt in my neck I just can`t get enough exercise ,and we are not suposed to lift anything over what a gallon of milk weighs..At first I was on a lot of med`s that had me all messed up ,felt like I was a zombie ,couldn`t think ,had migraines all the time ,listless ,tired all the time .But even then I stayed within 10 lbs of my weight .Now however ,I am not on anything for SM (lyerica,gabepentine ,neurotine ,morphine) and noe I am 80 lbs over weight .Anyone have this problem ?

I am able to get out and about and do alot of things I couldn't do a year or two ago now that my meds keep me feeling better. But I gained 40 lbs nevertheless. Are you eating comfort foods? Drink alot of soda? Eat alot of candy? I have lost 7 lbs in two weeks just cutting out soda and candy and am still losing weight. Maybe watch your empty calories and portion control.

I'm taking Lyrica, Meloxicam, Lortab, Wellbutrin, Trazodone and Tramadol. I take the Depo shot to help control my out of control mood swings (I was on it for over 10 yrs and never gained an ounce, I was actually very underweight at 89 lbs-115 lbs and I'm 6 ft tall), I was 135 lbs before all of this started and in the past year and a half, I have put on 40+ lbs and it sucks! I hate how I look, but when I exercise, I feel it for a week. SO yeah, I'm being told by a tiny little thing, no more than 60 lbs soaking wet that I am plus size and that I need a 10 to a 12, that makes me feel oh so much better. HAHAHAHAHA blehhhhh!

Thank you for your responces . I still don`t get it .I tried to ride my bicycle 6 months after my surgery , but my balance was so bad that after falling off twice I decided not to take a chance a put it away .I have lately taken it back out but don`t have enough energy to ride it for more than a mile and then I have to walk it back to the house . I have even asked my doc what to do and he has just told me I need to eat right and the weight will fix itself . I have always ate the right things and only eat red meat once a week . I used to do Martial Arts but one of my doctors told me not to do it anymore ,even though I didn`t compete in the fighting parts he still said it was not a good idea to do it .He said because of the stretching and the impact from doing the twisting and spinning .I tried to do Tae Chi but it just didn`t work for me and the instructor kept telling me that I was trying to do it to fast and I was disrupting the class . I guess I am going to have to go to one of these doctors weight loss centers and see if they can help .Any ideas ? Tapped out ........

Oh ,since I started this I went back to my pain doc and he has put me back on Tramidol and Flexirill so Iam now adjusting to my med`s agian .

My GP say`s that every thing looks ok on my blood work and I do have hypothroid and am on the med`s for it . Just can`t figure it out .I was on the thryroid med`s long before I was diagnosed with SM and didn`t have a problem with weight gain . Thanks for the input though .

what meds were you on... Glad you change I think the weight will drop now

Rozia ,the only meds I am on for the SM are Flexrill and Tramidol .My other meds are Levothroxen (for thryoid) ,Nexium (for heartburn and gurd) ,Allipurnol (for arthritis and gout) ,Zertyc (for hayfever ) .On ocation I have to take Imitrex injections for migraines . I have been going to my pain doc and he has been giving my epidoural injections in the facet joints in my neck ,mid back,and lumbar back ,with very limited results ,if any .
