Hi, I'm coming out of a 10 year marriage to a sociopath. It's been hard as you'll all know, but I just read 'Husband, Liar, Sociopath' and suddenly it became clear what I've been dealing with.
Everything that was so confusing in his behavior now makes sense when realizing he is a sociopath who does not care about anyone else's needs, has no empathy and no moral compass.
He was really skilful at lying and make me doubt my perceptions. He even figured out how to act empathetic by copying me. He is an excellent copier and actor. He can be extremely charming, which is the part of him I miss. This sounds like a typical experience of being a sociopath's partner.
We are getting divorced and I am letting go but I've had the strange difficulty of thinking about him too much even though I don't want him back, and my thoughts often focus on his future instead of mine. I wonder how to overcome this, is it just constant retraining of my thoughts to focus on me? It feels like he colonized my mind in some way. Is it a common problem, maybe from always worrying what he'd do next, wondering how to keep him happy, to focus more on him than on myself?
Does anyone else have any experience like this or insights on how to move on successfully?

i believe 3 of my relationships were with sociopaths, but I only had 2 of them confirmed as such by a therapist.
I actually brought these men to my therapists to show him what I am dealing with.
You are consumed with him simply because it is normal to feel this way after a 10 year marriage is ending, but also many victims of the sociopaths frequently blame themselves for taking too long to leave the abuser.
By that time, the person has already lost all of the support systems either because the sociopath has made sure that that happened and/or because friends and family are tired of watching the cycle of abuse repeat itself.
I don’t have an answer about how to successfully move on from this, because I am still learning..
however, I have now met a normal man, who is just delightful and amazing and he showed me what it is like to be treated well. I will never go back to what was with these other people.
