Spouses of Prisoners Community Group
Are you the spouse (husband/wife/partner/etc) of someone incarcerated? Each person's experience with having a loved one in prison is different and sometimes the specific support they need varies on their relationship. Parents, siblings, children, spouses... they all experience it a little differently.
Hi,
I'm a 30 year old single mom of an 11 year old boy. Recently, I have gotten engaged to the love with the love of my life. This is difficult for me to talk about because he is incarcerated in another state for another 12 years.
I am extreemly happy with him but the distance and rules of prison are weighing on me. I miss him so much, it hurts.
My family (well the ones that I told) are not very supprotive of my decision to marry an inmate. I wish that they could just share in my happiness and excitement. Their negativity about it has caused me to shut down when it comes to conversation with them. Why can't they just accept me decision and see that I am happy with him? I do however have some friends that support us but it's not the same.
Beside my families negativity evrything is good. I'm currently working on getting all of my ducks in a row in prepartion for our big day. There are so many rules and regulations. Although, I know it will all be worth it in the long run. I just wish that our circumstances were different.
I joined this group to find out if there is anyone else out there that has gone through or is currently going through a simular situation that may have some advice for me.
Reading your post literally brought tears to my eyes. Because I can relate to you so much. It is still a struggle for me everyday as well. Although, my fiance and I don't get to video chat. The prison he is in doesn't allow it. So I downloaded a voice recorder to my phone to record our conversations. When I'm feeling low I go back and listen to them. Recently I've found that writing poems about my feelings has helped a little. I have yet to find a something that really helps with the pain of missing him and wanting him to be home. I daydream cry often as well. It sucks because even though he and I are so happy together I still most times feel like I have no one to talk to who gets it. This site is helpful when it comes to trying to find someone who may understand and be there to listen when you need it. But that's about it.
