Sjogren's Syndrome Support Group
Sjogren's syndrome is an autoimmune disorder in which immune cells attack and destroy the exocrine glands that produce tears and saliva. It also associated with rheumatic disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis, and it is rheumatoid factor positive in 90 percent of cases.
I have infections periodically in the corners of my mouth, and the dentist I saw who specializes in Sjogren's says I had it in my mouth. She prescribed nystatin mouthwash (sans sugar, available only at a compounding pharmacy). When I use it, my mouth feels stripped of all moisture. I'm wondering if anyone else is using it and what effects it has. Also, I'm wondering if the yeast infection comes and goes on its own and how I know I have the yeast infection. I can't see anything different. Is it only by testing that you know you have it? Or is it more likely present when the burning sensation is strongest?
Slippery Elm Bark is also recommendd and comes in sprays which is supposed to turn into a gel when mixed with water and leave a film in your mouth which may alleviate some of that dryness you're having.
There is caution noted when using Goldenseal. It's only recommended to use up to 3 weeks and then stopping. I didn't see any caution surrounding Slippery Elm Bark but may have missed that.
