In my office we order MI Paste directly through our dental supplier. It is also available on the internet. Sometimes Amazon.com has it, but today when I did a search, I could only find it through dental suppliers or on Ebay. A company rep has told me that they will sell the regular MI Paste to a Sjogren's support group if a dentist will sponsor them. The stuff runs about $20 a tube commercially, although I did see if for a little less on Ebay with free shipping. We order it several cases at a time and get a case free which allows us to distribute it for less through the office. You might ask your dentist about carrying it.

I'll be glad to post the link for the video that explains how it works if anyone is interested. I have no financial interest in this product, but just love how well it works for me and my dry mouth patients.

My dentist said he would make me some teeth whitening trays which I could use to put MI paste in and sleep with it surrounding my teeth. Blogs have told of it remineralizing teeth and preventing cavities. The trays are $75 so I'm saving up, but hopefully I'll get to it before the next cavity strikes. MI paste doesn't have any abrasive in it, so it doesn't substitute for toothpaste, but it seems like a lovely tooth protector to put on afterwards. The dentist also sold me the MI paste.

Thanks for all of your help DryRDH. Everything is a help! I lost 3 teeth in 4 years before I ever knew there was a connection of Sjogrens and tooth decay. My dentist just isn't up on this; I 'll see if I can't enlighten him.

You should be able to find more information on dry mouth management at the American Dental Association or American Dental Hygiene Association websites. There are more courses at our dental conferences on dry mouth and Sjogren's issues. Your dentist would have to have his head in the sand to miss some of the articles in recent dental journals.

I live in Southern California. You can contact the Sjogren's Foundation or check out their support groups (see link below) to contact a support group leader who may be able to give you a suggestion. Sometimes though it's just a matter of finding someone who is already treating a Sjogren's patient so you don't have to start at square 1. Still you should probably plan on educating him or her. The Sjogren's Handbook (new one coming out this Fall) has great information on treating Sjogren's patients. You might copy those pages or lend it to your dentist so they can get up to speed a little quicker.

And do get the dental hygienist looking for samples of new dry mouth products at her next convention. Our whole education is prevention oriented, and we can get deals or order samples at conventions that we might not be able to get the rest of the year. I've made friends with our drug company reps so we get more samples than some of the other offices because of our large Sjogren's population in our practice and all the other dry mouth people we see.
