Sjogren's Syndrome Support Group
Sjogren's syndrome is an autoimmune disorder in which immune cells attack and destroy the exocrine glands that produce tears and saliva. It also associated with rheumatic disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis, and it is rheumatoid factor positive in 90 percent of cases.
I am not saying this is the cause but we do have, I believe three salivary glands that run along the jaw and up to the ear. If these glands are blocked, dry or anything else I can imagine it can be pretty painful. Another possibility is inflammatory arthritis that we are blessed with.
Do you clench or grind your teeth? If you do you should look into a night guard for the grinding. They do help.
I am new to this board and also just starting to learn about my Sjogren's so feel free to correct me any time...
I also have jaw and teeth pain very frequently, always on my right side...kinda feels like I have a wisdom tooth that needs to come out, but I've already had my wisdom teeth removed.
I use an overnight saliva substitute and it is not fully dissolved when I wake up, so I guess it is working.
I also have the Inflammatory Arthritis, but thought my Plaquenil was working pretty well...never thought of having inflammatory arthritis around the jaw/face area.
I take Desipramine (like Elavil) and my neuro worked with a compounding pharmacist and created a cream that I put on my face that contains the following: Gabapentin, Lidocaine and Capsaicin. These things, over time, have helped noticeably. I still have weird breakthrough pain. A cool wind on my face will set it off very badly. I have some Percocet to take in case of emergencies.
I have chronic pain and systemic problems of all shapes and sizes due to this horrible syndrome.
I do use a mouth brace at night. Did you ever get diagnosed with fibro? I'd check into this if I were you. And have a sleep study, because lack of delta sleep, slow and deep waves, causes pain and stiffness.
Sure sounds like this may be yet another gift from Sjogren's.
All I can do is take pain meds, I ice and use a topical anti-inflammatory gel called Volteran Gel. These things probably help a little but the pain is with me 99.9% of the time and mostly in my ear but when I am rubbing the gel on my joint by the ear it is quite tender.
Hope you feel better. If it is inflammatory there is always a chance it will subside. That is my prayer.
