Sjogren's Syndrome Support Group
Sjogren's syndrome is an autoimmune disorder in which immune cells attack and destroy the exocrine glands that produce tears and saliva. It also associated with rheumatic disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis, and it is rheumatoid factor positive in 90 percent of cases.
I have also asked my Ophthalmologist and she really had no explanation as to why I am worse at night. So, maybe it's just me?
What's even weirder is my hands and feet always dry out at night. Every time I get up, I have to put lotion on my hands and feet before I lay back down, or else I can't sleep! It drives me insane! I also have to reapply chapstick every time I wake up. I make my husband nuts with all the shit I have to do in order to be able to lay down to go to sleep. But at least with my diagnosis, I have an excuse. Before he just thought I was crazy. lol
One of you mentioned the doctor said you were possibly sleeping with your eye lids open; causing dryness. Well, I heard that one way back and what you can do and I did, was have your spouse check on you if they were to wake in the night and use a small flashlight and see if indeed your eyes are open. Mine were not. I have used eye pillow and sometimes heat one in microwave till mildly warm and fall asleep with it on. My dryness has also moved way back to my throat (at night). I make a conscience effort to notice when I wake, most nights many many times from dryness, and I note if my mouth is open - and sometimes it is, but most times it is not.
Probably like most of you, my night stand consists of: Humidifier, liquid tears, lip balm, lotion, and of course large water with lid and flexible straw.
I have used Zylimelts, not too much - last time they really bugged me. I've realized that water to the dry mouth is just such a temporary relief; since saliva is what we are trying to replace and it is important for so many reasons. I will jump with JOY if I ever wake in the morning and have slept solid all the way through the night.
Oh well, thanks for your replies and here's to good night :)
