Sjogren's Syndrome Support Group
Sjogren's syndrome is an autoimmune disorder in which immune cells attack and destroy the exocrine glands that produce tears and saliva. It also associated with rheumatic disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis, and it is rheumatoid factor positive in 90 percent of cases.
My best advice is to take a sinus rinse system with you so you can rinse out the "smoke" and other irritants to keep from making things worse. I use one twice a day for pollen and that gunk that collects from sinus drainage. I used to get sinus infections all the time, but if I do the sinus rinsing twice a day, I stay healthy and breathing free.
I started with the NeilMed sinus rinse squeeze bottle. Now I actually use a sinus rinse tip that fits on my Water Pik. I buy the sterile pH-buffered salt packets at the store and stock up when they go on sale. The salt pulls excess fluids out of the sinus tissues which opens things up without drugs so breathing is easier.
NeilMed also makes a very nice saline gel spritzer that helps to maintain a moist environment in your nose for hours. It's like being at the beach here in California -- cool and moist.
Good luck!
